Newly surfaced documentation suggests that The Pokémon Company has wanted to increase the price of mainline Pokémon games since the launch of Pokémon Sword and Shield, but several external factors reportedly prevented that plan from moving forward. With those obstacles no longer in place, there’s growing speculation that Pokémon Winds and Waves will launch at a higher price than previous entries.
While Nintendo has not officially confirmed a price, the documents indicate that a price increase has been under consideration for years rather than being a recent decision.
Price increase plans reportedly date back to Sword and Shield
According to the reported documentation, The Pokémon Company explored raising prices during the Nintendo Switch era when Pokémon Sword and Shield launched in 2019. However, market conditions and other external factors ultimately kept pricing unchanged.
Since then, the gaming industry has changed significantly. Development costs have increased, inflation has affected production expenses, and publishers across the industry have gradually moved toward higher retail prices for new releases.
With Pokémon Winds and Waves expected to launch in 2027, those earlier concerns may no longer prevent Nintendo and The Pokémon Company from introducing a higher price point.
Nintendo’s pricing strategy has already changed
Nintendo has already shown it’s willing to experiment with game pricing following the release of the Nintendo Switch 2.
One of the biggest changes is the difference between physical and digital editions. Digital versions of first-party games are now generally sold for around $10 less than their physical counterparts, creating a pricing model that differs from previous Nintendo generations.
Whether Pokémon Winds and Waves follows this strategy remains unknown, but it would not be surprising if both versions receive different price tags at launch.
Physical copies remain important
Unlike parts of the PlayStation and Xbox ecosystems, where digital-only hardware is becoming increasingly common, Nintendo continues to support physical game releases.
That means players will likely still have the choice between buying a cartridge or purchasing the game digitally. If Nintendo keeps its current pricing model, digital buyers could receive a modest discount while collectors and retail buyers pay a premium for the physical edition.
No official price yet
Despite the reported documents, Nintendo and The Pokémon Company have not announced an official retail price for Pokémon Winds and Waves.
Pricing information is unlikely to arrive until much closer to launch, potentially during a future Nintendo Direct or Pokémon Presents event in late 2026 or early 2027.
For now, fans should treat the reported documents as an indication of Nintendo’s long-term pricing ambitions rather than confirmation of a specific launch price. However, given the company’s recent pricing changes and broader industry trends, the next mainline Pokémon adventure could end up becoming the most expensive entry in the franchise’s history.
