One of the Nintendo 64’s most iconic platformers is making its way to PC thanks to a passionate group of fans. The team behind Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled has officially announced an unofficial native PC port that brings Rare’s classic adventure to modern hardware with several welcome upgrades.
Instead of relying on emulation, the project recompiles the original Nintendo 64 game into a native PC application. That allows the game to run more efficiently while opening the door to features that were impossible on the original hardware.
Modern upgrades for a classic adventure
The developers have confirmed a long list of improvements that modernize the experience without changing the gameplay fans remember.
Players can expect:
- Unlocked frame rates
- Widescreen support
- High-resolution rendering
- Lower input latency
- Full mod support
- Multiple quality-of-life improvements
These additions aim to make Donkey Kong 64 feel smoother and more responsive while preserving the original game.
Tag Anywhere removes one of the game’s biggest frustrations
One of the standout additions is a feature called Tag Anywhere.
In the Nintendo 64 release, players frequently had to travel back to Tag Barrels to switch between Donkey Kong and the other playable Kongs. The new feature removes that restriction by allowing players to swap characters almost anywhere in the game.
For many longtime fans, this is one of the most requested improvements, as it significantly reduces unnecessary backtracking.
Developed by experienced members of the community
The team working on Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled is already well known within the game’s modding scene. Several developers have spent years creating tools, fixes, and the popular Donkey Kong 64 Randomizer.
Their experience with the game’s code has helped them build a native PC version that stays faithful to the original while creating a solid foundation for future updates and community-made mods.
You’ll still need your own copy of the game
As with other recompilation projects, the PC port will not include Nintendo’s copyrighted game files.
Players must provide their own legally obtained Donkey Kong 64 ROM before they can build and play the game. This approach has become standard for fan-made recompilation projects and helps avoid distributing copyrighted assets.
Another classic joins the growing list
Donkey Kong 64 joins a growing collection of Nintendo 64 games receiving unofficial native PC ports. Over the past few years, fans have successfully brought several classic titles to modern hardware, allowing players to enjoy higher frame rates, widescreen support, improved controls, and extensive modding possibilities.
With Donkey Kong 64 now joining that list, another beloved Nintendo classic is set to become far more accessible for PC players while preserving the experience that made it memorable more than 25 years ago.
The developers are currently aiming to release Donkey Kong 64: Recompiled during the summer of 2026. An exact launch date has not yet been announced.
