Nova Swarm Update Introduces Tactical Draft and 32 Permanent Augments

Nova Swarm has received one of its biggest gameplay updates yet. Developer Tiny Foundry has introduced the new Tactical Draft system, giving players far more control over how each run evolves while adding several quality-of-life improvements and visual upgrades.

Tactical Draft Changes Every Boss Fight

The headline feature is Tactical Draft, which activates after every boss battle. Instead of simply moving on, players now choose one permanent Tactical Augment from a selection of three.

These augments do far more than provide small stat boosts. Each choice can significantly shape a run, allowing players to specialize in offense, mobility, defense, utility, combo-focused gameplay, survivability, or creative hybrid builds.

The update introduces 32 Tactical Augments, spread across four categories:

Offense

  • Increase damage output.
  • Improve combo potential.
  • Create more aggressive playstyles.

Mobility

  • Enhance movement.
  • Unlock new positioning options.
  • Improve survivability through speed.

Defense

  • Boost survivability.
  • Increase durability during longer runs.
  • Provide stronger defensive tools.

Utility

  • Improve pickup control.
  • Enhance resource management.
  • Add unique mechanics that can completely change a build.

If none of the three offered augments fit a player’s strategy, the game now includes a Rescan option, allowing the selection to refresh.

Better Build Tracking

Players can now easily keep track of every Tactical Augment they collect during a run.

The update adds:

  • A compact 2×4 Tactical HUD tray showing active augments.
  • Overflow support for builds with more than eight augments.
  • A complete Tactical build overview in the pause menu.
  • Full build summaries in the Run Report after each session.
  • Clickable augment entries in both How To Play and the Tactical Upgrades menu.
  • Automatic Codex entries for newly discovered augments.

One-time-use augments, such as Nano Patch, are now clearly marked as Consumed after activation. They disappear from the active HUD while remaining visible in the final run summary.

More Rewarding Progression

Tiny Foundry has also improved the pacing between combat encounters.

Sector milestone celebrations now offer larger reward moments and scale more noticeably as runs progress deeper into the game.

Combo milestones have also been reworked to feel more rewarding while avoiding the excessive wall-of-text notifications seen in earlier versions.

Outside of combat, gameplay backgrounds now drift through space instead of remaining static, giving each run a greater sense of movement.

The update also refreshes the Longship Protocol, adding a louder Viking rowing ritual to the experience.

Quality-of-Life Improvements

Several smaller improvements arrive alongside the new gameplay systems.

Boss support refuel values now round correctly, eliminating awkward decimal numbers.

Permanent Drone and Magnet augments no longer display misleading countdown timers.

Meanwhile, the valuable +2 Life jackpot has become much harder to secure. It now moves around the battlefield, expires after a short time, and can no longer be collected automatically using the Magnet upgrade, requiring players to actively chase it down.

Finally, the How To Play section has been expanded to explain all of the newly added systems.

The Tactical Draft update represents one of Nova Swarm’s largest gameplay overhauls so far, placing much more emphasis on player choice and allowing every run to develop into a unique build instead of following the same progression each time.
