Majora’s Mask Remake Rumors Continue as Fans Hope for a Switch 2 Revival

Rumors surrounding a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask have started circulating once again, but there is currently no official confirmation from Nintendo. While there are reasons to believe the beloved adventure could eventually return, fans should treat the latest reports with caution.

IMDB Listing Sparks New Speculation

The latest wave of speculation began after an update appeared on the IMDB page of Japanese voice actor Nobuyuki Hiyama. The listing mentioned a Majora’s Mask remake, leading many fans to believe Nintendo could already be working on the project.

However, IMDB is not considered a reliable source for unannounced games. Since anyone can edit entries on the website, the listing cannot be viewed as proof that a remake is in development.

For now, the rumor remains exactly that—a rumor.

Why a Remake Makes Sense

Despite the unreliable source, there are several reasons why a Majora’s Mask remake feels like a realistic possibility.

The game originally launched on the Nintendo 64 as a direct sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Rather than following a traditional formula, it introduced its famous three-day time cycle, dozens of collectible masks with unique abilities, and one of the darkest atmospheres in the Zelda series. Those elements helped the game earn lasting praise and build a dedicated fan base.

Nintendo has also revisited both games before. Ocarina of Time 3D launched in 2011 for the Nintendo 3DS, while Majora’s Mask 3D followed in 2015. Since the two titles share many assets, creating another remake after an updated Ocarina of Time would be a logical next step.

Ocarina of Time Could Determine the Future

Reports already suggest Nintendo is developing a Switch 2 remake of Ocarina of Time, making the future of Majora’s Mask even more interesting.

If that remake mainly focuses on improved visuals and modern hardware, much of the work could potentially carry over into a Majora’s Mask remake. Reusing environments, character models, and gameplay systems would significantly reduce development time.

On the other hand, if Nintendo completely redesigns Ocarina of Time with major gameplay or world changes, creating a faithful version of Majora’s Mask could become a far larger project and take considerably longer.

Don’t Expect It Anytime Soon

Even if Nintendo eventually decides to remake Majora’s Mask, fans should not expect it to arrive in the near future.

Any potential release would likely come well after the rumored Ocarina of Time remake. Until then, players can revisit the original Majora’s Mask through the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack service while waiting to see whether Nintendo makes the classic adventure part of the Switch 2 lineup.
