PlayStation Free Multiplayer Weekend Lets PS4 and PS5 Players Go Online Without PS Plus

PlayStation owners will soon be able to play online without paying for a PlayStation Plus subscription, as Sony has confirmed another free multiplayer weekend for PS4 and PS5 users. The limited-time event gives players 72 hours to experience online multiplayer at no extra cost, although it arrives during a week that has already sparked significant controversy surrounding PlayStation.

The promotion begins on July 3 and runs until July 5, allowing anyone with a PlayStation account to access online multiplayer in supported games they already own. During the event, a PlayStation Plus subscription will not be required to play online with friends or other players.

No PlayStation Plus Required for Online Multiplayer

Normally, online multiplayer on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 requires an active PlayStation Plus Essential subscription, which starts at $10.99 per month. During the free weekend, that requirement is temporarily removed, giving non-subscribers the opportunity to jump into multiplayer games without paying.

Players should note that the promotion only unlocks online multiplayer. It does not include the monthly PlayStation Plus Essential games or any of the additional benefits available to subscribers.

As with previous PlayStation free multiplayer weekends, Sony has not indicated that players will need to enter payment information to participate. Historically, these events have only required a PlayStation account.

Event Celebrates the Esports World Cup

Sony says the free multiplayer weekend is part of its celebration of the Esports World Cup, which runs from July 6 through August 23.

The company is also highlighting related esports broadcasts, including the ongoing Valorant Group Stage and the tournament’s opening ceremony scheduled for July 8, encouraging players to join the celebration both in-game and through esports coverage.

Announcement Overshadowed by PlayStation Disc Backlash

While free multiplayer weekends are generally welcomed by players, this announcement has struggled to generate the same excitement as previous events.

The promotion was revealed on the same day Sony confirmed it plans to stop producing physical PlayStation game discs beginning in 2028, a decision that has triggered widespread criticism from many fans. Concerns surrounding game preservation, ownership, and consumer choice quickly dominated discussion across social media.

As a result, many players viewed the free multiplayer weekend as poorly timed, with some describing it as a small gesture that does little to address the larger concerns surrounding PlayStation’s long-term digital strategy.

Ongoing Debate Around Paid Console Multiplayer

The announcement has also reignited the long-running discussion over paid online multiplayer on consoles.

Many critics argue that charging players a monthly subscription simply to access online gameplay remains difficult to justify, especially when multiplayer on PC platforms is generally available without an additional service fee. While PlayStation Plus offers monthly games and other benefits beyond multiplayer access, the requirement itself continues to divide opinion among console players.

Even so, the upcoming weekend provides a chance for anyone without PlayStation Plus to experience online multiplayer before deciding whether a subscription is worth purchasing.
