PlayStation Appears to Be Moving Beyond PS Stars

PlayStation may be laying the groundwork for a new rewards system centered entirely on PlayStation Store wallet credit, as fresh clues emerge following the announced wind-down of PlayStation Stars.

A PlayStation Store page recently spotted by a Reddit user shows a wallet image labeled “wallet credit,” marked as “announced” with a “to be determined” release date. While the page offers no public details, its existence strongly suggests Sony is testing or preparing a replacement concept rather than simply retiring its loyalty program outright.

What PlayStation Stars Offered Players

PlayStation Stars was integrated into the PlayStation app and allowed players to progress through ranks by earning trophies and purchasing full games. As users leveled up, they unlocked perks such as priority customer support at higher tiers.

Players could also complete rotating activities, including:

  • Playing newly added PlayStation Plus titles
  • Finishing games on harder difficulties
  • Discovering hidden “mystery” games
  • Launch-day play of first-party exclusives

Completing these tasks rewarded points, which could be redeemed for full games, digital collectibles, or PlayStation Store wallet funds. Among these options, wallet credit quickly became the most popular reward.

Shutdown Timeline and Current Status

PlayStation Stars effectively became inactive on July 23, 2025, with no new points or collectibles available to earn. However, players can still redeem any existing points until the program fully shuts down on November 2, 2026.

Sony previously stated that the program would be “evolved,” leaving the door open for a successor rather than a complete exit from rewards-based engagement.

Why the Store Page Matters

Community discussion around the newly discovered Store listing highlights a few notable details:

  • The page is treated like an application or add-on, not a standard store purchase
  • Its timing aligns closely with PS Stars’ expiry notices
  • The branding focuses solely on wallet credit, with no mention of collectibles

This has led many to believe Sony may be simplifying its approach—shifting away from digital trophies and collectibles in favor of something closer to a cashback-style system.

Possible Directions for a New Rewards System

While nothing has been confirmed, speculation around the listing points to several potential mechanics:

  • Store-spending cashback in wallet credit
  • Trophy-linked or playtime-based accrual
  • Task- or survey-based rewards
  • Integration with PlayStation Tournaments

All of these would represent a more direct, value-driven incentive compared to the layered structure of PS Stars.

What We Know—and What We Don’t

At this stage, Sony has not officially announced a replacement program, nor confirmed that the wallet-credit page represents a live project. No launch window, earning rules, or eligibility details have been shared.

For now, this remains an inferred lead based on Store activity and timing—but it strongly suggests that PlayStation is not done experimenting with player rewards, just rethinking how they work.
