Roblox has been removed from public access in Russia after Roskomnadzor issued a nationwide ban in early December 2025. The regulator claimed that the platform contained material involving the “propaganda or justification of extremist and terrorist activity,” triggering one of the largest gaming restrictions the country has enforced recently.
Authorities cited several categories of alleged violations, including unlawful sexual content involving minors, sexual harassment, gambling mechanics, encouragement of violence, attacks on the education system, and LGBT-related information. The decision also extends to Roblox’s communication features, including in-game chat. No specific titles or creators were identified.
Millions of Russian Players Affected
The ban immediately impacts more than two million daily active users in Russia. Roblox maintains over 100 million monthly active players globally, and several of its most popular community-created titles—such as Forsaken, Rivals, and Grow a Garden—exceeded 120,000 daily players in November 2025.
For developers and creators who rely on Russian engagement for monetization, the loss of this audience will have noticeable effects.
Russia Joins Growing List of Countries Restricting Roblox
With this decision, Russia becomes the ninth country to restrict or block Roblox, alongside China, Indonesia, Greece, Guatemala, Jordan, North Korea, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The move also aligns with Russia’s broader pattern of tightening access to global digital platforms following earlier restrictions on Meta services, YouTube, and Discord during its ongoing conflict with Ukraine.
Roblox Faces Broader Safety Scrutiny Worldwide
Roblox continues to face legal pressure in the United States, where states including Louisiana, Kentucky, and Texas have filed lawsuits alleging insufficient safety protections for minors.
In response, Roblox has implemented several new measures: selfie-based age verification, ID-linked age estimation, stricter chat limits for younger users, age-sorted communication groups, and expanded parental controls. Despite these updates, the platform remains under regulatory scrutiny in multiple regions.
Industry Impact Extends Beyond Roblox
Many major publishers have already halted or limited operations in Russia due to political and regulatory tensions. Individual studios and game services have made similar decisions, reshaping the gaming landscape within the region. Roblox’s removal now adds to the increasing list of platforms no longer accessible to Russian players.
