A Developer’s Mistake Turns Into a Permanent Giveaway
PICO PARK: Classic Edition has unexpectedly gone free on Steam, and this time it’s not part of a limited promotion or event. Developer TECOPARK accidentally made the 10-player co-op platformer free while preparing an update — and due to Steam’s policies, there’s no going back.
The developer admitted that they “forgot that once you switch from paid to free, you can never revert to paid.” After realizing the irreversible change, TECOPARK decided to embrace the situation and make the game permanently free to download.
About PICO PARK: Classic Edition
Originally released in 2016, PICO PARK: Classic Edition is a 2-to-10-player cooperative puzzle-platformer where teamwork is key. Each level requires players to collaborate, communicate, and solve challenges that depend on perfect timing and synchronization.
The game gained popularity on YouTube and Twitch for its chaotic but hilarious multiplayer moments, and it recently received updates adding online functionality and improved visuals.
Now officially listed as Free to Play on Steam, PICO PARK: Classic Edition has already seen a surge of new players and “Very Positive” recent reviews.
Steam’s Irreversible Pricing Rule
Steam’s developer policy states that once a game switches from paid to free, it cannot return to a paid model. This rule is designed to prevent developers from exploiting pricing changes or manipulating player behavior — but in this case, it caught TECOPARK off guard.
Rather than attempt a workaround, the developer confirmed they’ll leave PICO PARK: Classic Edition free indefinitely and focus on supporting newer titles in the series.
A Happy Accident for Players
The unexpected shift has been celebrated by fans, with many calling it a “happy accident.” The free classic edition now serves as an easy entry point into the PICO PARK series, potentially driving more interest in PICO PARK (2021) and PICO PARK 2, both of which remain paid titles.
