Pokémon Legends: Z-A Update 1.0.1 Released Ahead of Launch

Just over a day before its official release, Pokémon Legends: Z-A has received its first update — version 1.0.1. The patch, which went live late on October 14, is small in size but essential for accessing the game’s online features once it launches on October 16.

Required for Online Features

According to The Pokémon Company, installing update 1.0.1 is mandatory for players who wish to use Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s online modes, including trading and battling. The patch applies to both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2 versions of the game. While a Nintendo Switch Online membership isn’t required to download the update, it is needed to access online content once the game is live.

No additional gameplay or performance changes were listed in the update notes, suggesting the patch is purely functional — focused on enabling connectivity features.

Returning to Lumiose City with Mega Evolution

Pokémon Legends: Z-A brings players back to Lumiose City, first featured in Pokémon X and Y, and reintroduces Mega Evolution as a central battle mechanic. The game also debuts a new action-based combat system reminiscent of the Xenoblade Chronicles series, giving battles a faster and more dynamic feel.

Early reviews for Pokémon Legends: Z-A have been largely positive. On OpenCritic, it currently holds a score of 82, slightly edging out its main competitor Digimon Story: Time Stranger, which sits at 80.

Battle Club Rewards and Mega Stones

Players aiming to collect every Mega Stone will need to participate in ranked Battle Club matches. These online free-for-all battles feature up to four trainers in timed three-minute matches. Participation will reward items required to Mega Evolve key starters like Chesnaught, Delphox, and Greninja. However, the number of matches required to unlock each reward remains unknown.

Missing Features at Launch

While update 1.0.1 ensures online functionality, Pokémon Legends: Z-A will not include Pokémon Home compatibility at launch. It’s unclear when or how often future updates will be rolled out after release.

With preloading now available on the Nintendo eShop, trainers can prepare for launch day by downloading the update early — ensuring they’re ready to battle, trade, and explore Lumiose City the moment the game goes live.
