Microsoft has stirred controversy once again after removing a popular perk from Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Subscribers have reported that they no longer have access to the 10% discount on Call of Duty add-ons, including COD Points and the BlackCell Battle Pass. The change comes shortly after the company announced a major price increase for the service, adding to growing frustrations among players.
The discount was one of the few incentives for Call of Duty fans subscribed to Game Pass Ultimate. Following Microsoft’s $69 billion acquisition of Activision-Blizzard in 2023, many expected improved integration and exclusive benefits for flagship franchises like Call of Duty, Diablo, and World of Warcraft. Instead, this removal feels like a step backward to many loyal customers.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Price Now $29.99
Earlier this month, Microsoft revealed that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate’s monthly fee would jump from $19.99 to $29.99. The new pricing took effect immediately for new subscribers, while existing members have until November 4 before being charged the higher rate.
To ease the backlash, Microsoft added nearly 50 new games to the Ultimate tier, including titles like Hogwarts Legacy, multiple Far Cry entries, and several Assassin’s Creed games. Additionally, Fortnite Crew was introduced as a new benefit for Ultimate subscribers. However, these additions have done little to offset the frustration over both the steep price hike and the loss of key perks.
Fans Question Microsoft’s Decisions
For many players, the removal of the Call of Duty discount feels especially unjustified, given that Activision-Blizzard is now fully under the Microsoft umbrella. The perk allowed subscribers to save money on COD Points and seasonal passes for Black Ops 6, Warzone, and other entries in the franchise. With Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 set to launch on November 14, the timing of this change couldn’t be worse.
Many fans see it as another example of corporate greed overshadowing consumer trust. What was once considered one of gaming’s best-value subscriptions now faces criticism for giving less while charging more.
Microsoft’s Response
In a recent interview, Dustin Blackwell, Microsoft’s Director of Gaming and Platform Communications, acknowledged the community’s frustration. “Price increases are never fun for anybody,” he said, explaining that Microsoft is trying to add “more value to these plans as well.”
While the company insists that these decisions are made carefully, subscribers remain unconvinced. The general sentiment is clear — removing perks while increasing costs sends the wrong message at a time when gamers are already struggling with subscription fatigue and rising prices across the industry.
