Call of Duty: WW2 has quietly returned to the Microsoft Store after nearly two months offline. The 2017 shooter, developed by Sledgehammer Games, was pulled from sale earlier this year following severe reports of Remote Code Execution (RCE) hacks that allowed malicious players to take control of others’ PCs. While its servers are now back online, Activision has not confirmed whether these exploits have been fully addressed.
Why WW2 Went Offline
At the end of June, Call of Duty: WW2 was added to Xbox Game Pass, part of Microsoft’s effort to expand its library of Activision-Blizzard titles following its $69 billion acquisition in 2023. The addition was welcomed by fans eager to revisit the series’ return to World War II after Infinite Warfare.
But PC players quickly reported RCE vulnerabilities that made the game unsafe to play online. While console players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S were unaffected, the PC version was swiftly removed from the Microsoft Store, and online servers were taken offline. Activision only stated it was investigating “an issue,” without directly confirming the hacking problem.
Servers Back Online, But No Official Fix Details
Now, the PC version of Call of Duty: WW2 is once again available via the Microsoft Store, and servers have been restored. However, Activision has not publicly detailed what measures, if any, were taken to address the RCE exploits.
This lack of communication leaves uncertainty for PC players considering a return to multiplayer. While the servers appear stable since coming back online, the absence of an official statement means that some caution is still recommended.
Expanding Call of Duty on Game Pass
The return of Call of Duty: WW2 marks another step in Microsoft’s ongoing effort to bring more of the franchise to Game Pass. Currently, titles such as Modern Warfare 2 (2022), Modern Warfare 3 (2023), and Black Ops 6 are all available on the subscription service.
Looking ahead, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 is scheduled to launch on November 14 as a direct sequel to 2012’s Black Ops 2. The game will release day-one on Game Pass for Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
