Final Fantasy 14 Nears the End of PS4 Support, Yoshi-P Confirms

Final Fantasy 14’s Future on PlayStation 4 Looks Uncertain

Final Fantasy 14’s long-running support on the PlayStation 4 may soon be coming to an end. Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida, the game’s producer and director, has shared new details about the MMO’s future and hinted that PS4 support is reaching its final stretch.

The Dawntrail expansion has concluded its main story arc, and the development team is preparing to move into the next chapter of Final Fantasy 14. While excitement is building for new content, players still using Sony’s previous-generation console may need to consider an upgrade.

Reaching the Hardware Limits

In a recent interview, Yoshi-P explained that the PS4’s hardware is being pushed to its absolute limits. He noted that Sony had previously allowed the team to extend the system’s technical boundaries but has since informed Square Enix that it cannot be pushed much further.

Yoshi-P avoided confirming whether the PS4 version will remain supported by the time the next expansion or patch 8.5 arrives, but made it clear that the hardware is “at its limits in terms of technology.” When support for the PS4 eventually ends, he assured players that he will personally explain the reasoning before any changes are made.

The Road Ahead for Final Fantasy 14 Players

For those still adventuring in Eorzea on a PS4, the writing may be on the wall. Square Enix has already optimized Final Fantasy 14 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, offering enhanced visuals and performance that the PS4 cannot match. Yoshida also mentioned that discussions are ongoing regarding a potential release on Nintendo’s next console, often referred to as the Switch 2.

While Square Enix remains committed to supporting as many platforms as possible for as long as feasible, the reality is clear: the PS4’s lifespan is ending, and its limitations are becoming increasingly evident. For players looking to experience the game at its best — and to ensure access to future expansions — upgrading to a newer system may soon be the only option.
