Pokémon Go Expands Trainer Level Cap to 80 This October

Niantic has officially confirmed that Pokémon Go will raise its trainer level cap for the first time since 2020. Beginning on 15th October, the current trainer cap of level 50 will be expanded to level 80, rebalancing the progression curve with reduced XP requirements across all levels.

This adjustment means many trainers may see their level jump automatically if they have already accumulated surplus XP beyond level 50. Niantic has assured that no players will lose levels, and further details will be provided regarding how many levels trainers may advance once the update goes live.

Changes to Level-Up Research and Rewards

As part of the new system, Level-Up Research tasks for levels 41–50 will be removed. Instead, new research tasks will be introduced for levels 71–80, giving high-level trainers new progression goals.

In addition, trainers at level 70 or higher will benefit from an increased chance of becoming Lucky Friends, making trading more rewarding at the highest tiers.

However, not all rewards will remain. The exclusive level 50 jacket will be retired from availability, though players who have already unlocked it will keep it permanently. Other avatar items tied to reaching levels 40–50 will also be removed after 15th October, meaning only existing trainers who earned them before the update will retain access.

XP Celebration Event

To help players prepare for the level cap increase, Niantic will host an XP Celebration event running from 25th August to 14th October. This event will offer boosted XP rewards to accelerate progression:

  • 2× Catch XP from Nice, Great, and Excellent throws
  • +3000 XP for winning raids
  • +3000 XP for winning Max Battles
  • Level-Up Research adjustment: Level 48’s walking requirement reduced from 25km eight times in a week to only twice in a week

Importantly, this trainer level expansion does not affect Pokémon levels, which remain capped at Level 50.

With more XP bonuses, new research milestones, and expanded progression ahead, trainers will have fresh incentives to keep pushing forward in Pokémon Go this autumn.
