Take-Two Interactive has provided updated insights into its strategy regarding subscription services, challenging the notion that the company is reluctant to support platforms like Xbox Game Pass and PlayStation Plus. While the publisher acknowledges its participation, it also emphasized that only a limited number of its titles are likely to appear on these platforms compared to the size of its overall content library.
The rise of subscription services in the 2010s sparked ongoing debate across the industry, particularly regarding their long-term financial sustainability. Many independent developers embraced these services to expand their reach, but larger publishers have remained cautious. Take-Two has been selective, balancing occasional partnerships with third-party platforms while also developing its own subscription model through GTA+.
Not Reluctant, But Selective
Despite being perceived as hesitant, Take-Two rejects the label of being reluctant toward subscription-based offerings. During a call with analysts in early August 2025, company president Karl Slatoff explained that Take-Two is open to these services, provided the economics align.
“We do put our titles occasionally into some of the subscription services,” Slatoff noted, adding that the company’s decisions are driven by financial sense. “We wouldn’t do it unless it was a good economic deal.”
What This Means for Players
For players hoping to see more Take-Two titles appear on Game Pass or PlayStation Plus, the outlook remains conservative. While games may occasionally be added, the publisher prioritizes traditional sales and internal models like GTA+, rather than widespread distribution through third-party subscriptions.
This approach underscores Take-Two’s confidence in the value of its franchises, including Grand Theft Auto, NBA 2K, and Red Dead Redemption, where strong sales continue to support a more traditional business model.
