As Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 nears the end of its life cycle, Activision is once again diving into the world of horror with its next high-profile crossover. The upcoming Season 5 update, set to launch on August 7, introduces The Fisherman from I Know What You Did Last Summer to both Black Ops 6 and Warzone.
The Fisherman Joins the Fight
Revealed in the official Season 5 roadmap, the latest horror-themed collaboration will bring The Fisherman to the in-game store as part of a new bundle. While an exact release date hasn’t been confirmed, Activision states that the skin will arrive “in-season,” hinting at a likely mid-season drop around early September.
This isn’t the first time Call of Duty has partnered with horror franchises. From Scream and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to SAW, The Crow, and Halloween, the series has a growing legacy of bringing iconic slasher villains into its universe as playable operators. The Fisherman now joins this roster of recognizable killers, continuing Activision’s trend of horror crossovers that ramp up around seasonal updates.
A Controversial Trend
Despite the excitement some fans have for these crossovers, the increasing volume of collaborations in Black Ops 6 hasn’t gone over well with everyone. Since launch, the game has featured crossovers with Squid Game, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, American Dad, and even Beavis & Butt-Head. Many players feel these additions are damaging the game’s atmosphere and immersion.
The backlash reached a boiling point during the recent American Dad collaboration. The Stan Smith operator in particular received sharp criticism for its low-quality visuals and awkward implementation. Some fans have gone so far as to compare Call of Duty unfavorably to other games like Fortnite, where stylized characters fit more naturally into the environment.
Looking Ahead
Regardless of community feedback, Activision shows no signs of slowing its crossover strategy. Season 5 is expected to deliver more themed bundles, multiplayer content, and Warzone updates. The Fisherman skin is just the latest in a long line of pop culture integrations aimed at keeping the game fresh—even if that comes at the cost of tonal consistency.
For horror fans, though, the addition of I Know What You Did Last Summer brings a nostalgic thrill to the battlefield, and it’s likely we’ll see more slashers return in future seasons.
