Nintendo has released the version 1.2.0 update for Mario Kart World as of July 29, 2025, bringing with it several new features, gameplay adjustments, and bug fixes. Celebrating two months since launch, the update introduces new rules for VS Races, nerfs a key item, and improves performance across numerous tracks.
Boomerang Flower Nerfed
One of the most significant changes in version 1.2.0 is a nerf to the Boomerang Flower item. Previously known for its homing ability that helped players target opponents more easily, the item’s homing potency has now been reduced. As a result, players will need to be more accurate when aiming the Boomerang to avoid missing their targets.
New Rules for VS Races
The patch introduces two new rule options to the VS Race mode, available in both Single Player and Multiplayer:
- No COM – Allows players to race without computer-controlled opponents.
- Mushrooms Only – Limits item boxes to only provide Mushroom boosts.
These additions aim to give players more control over their custom races, catering to competitive and casual preferences alike.
Gameplay Adjustments
Nintendo has made several notable gameplay tweaks:
- CPU Difficulty: CPU racers have been toned down in every mode except Battle mode.
- Item Balancing: The rate of Triple Dash Mushrooms appearing in lower race positions has been decreased (unless in Frantic mode). Conversely, the chance of getting a ? Block item has been slightly increased under most item rule sets.
- Lap-Type Courses: These now appear more frequently in VS Race and wireless race selections, replacing the prior emphasis on Intermission-style tracks.
Additionally, a visual enhancement now shows a wheel-spinning animation if players press the acceleration button too early during race countdowns. However, this no longer results in a loss of speed.
Replay and Spectator Enhancements
Quality-of-life improvements have been introduced across Time Trials and Online Play modes:
- Players can now view replays after downloading ghost data in Time Trials.
- In Knockout Tour and Balloon Battle, players can now choose whom to spectate across all online and LAN options.
- A waiting time display has been added before the start of the next race or battle.
Extensive Bug Fixes Across Tracks
Version 1.2.0 includes dozens of fixes addressing player-reported issues across a wide variety of tracks:
- Fixed players floating mid-air after jumping off half pipes.
- Addressed issues where Bullet Bill would send players out of bounds or prevent gliding.
- Resolved a wide range of collision bugs, where players got stuck or slipped through terrain in tracks like Sky-High Sundae, Choco Mountain, Bowser’s Castle, Dino Dino Jungle, and many more.
- Corrected issues with Smart Steering, Peach Medallion collection, and various online race visual glitches.
The update also improves user input reliability in “Free Roam” mode and corrects scoring and display inconsistencies in team races and wireless battles.
Required for Online Play
Nintendo has confirmed that version 1.2.0 is mandatory for online play going forward. While this update resolves numerous known issues, it remains unclear whether a previously reported glitch involving the Spiny Shell item has been addressed.
With these improvements, Mario Kart World continues to refine its gameplay and expand options for racers across all modes. As support for the title remains active, fans can likely expect additional balance changes and features in the coming months.
