In the early days of PSN, avatars were the only way for users to customize their profiles. These could be selected from a limited pool of free images or purchased individually from the PlayStation Store. Over the years, many players amassed large collections—some of which date back nearly two decades.
On newer systems like the PS5, users have more freedom in setting profile pictures, including custom images for friends. Still, these older avatars remained accessible and usable—until recently.
