Nintendo Announces New Switch Online Playtest Program for July 28–August 10

Nintendo has officially announced its next Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program, scheduled to run from July 28 to August 10, 2025. The upcoming event follows the company’s previous playtest in late 2024 and gives select subscribers a chance to try out a mysterious multiplayer experience ahead of its wider release.

Applications Open July 21

Applications for the playtest open on July 21 at 8:00 AM PT. According to Nintendo, participation will be limited to 40,000 players worldwide and will be granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Players may apply as individuals or in groups, though all group members must be from the same region and meet all requirements.

The playtest is open only to subscribers of the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack who meet the following criteria:

  • Have a Nintendo Account registered in one of the eligible countries: United States, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, Japan, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, or Spain.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.
  • Maintain an active NSO + Expansion Pack subscription through the playtest period.

Nintendo has confirmed that this playtest continues testing “the same service” introduced in last year’s session, which featured a multiplayer creative sandbox game that allowed players to explore, gather, and build. However, no further details were provided about any changes or improvements players might expect this time around.

Switch Online Expands Its Offerings in 2025

The announcement comes during a busy year for Nintendo Switch Online. Earlier in 2025, Nintendo rolled out a selection of classic GameCube titles for NSO + Expansion Pack subscribers who own a Switch 2. The lineup includes F-Zero GX, Soulcalibur 2, Super Mario Strikers, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

There are also ongoing rumors about upcoming additions to the Nintendo 64 library, with leaked titles such as Donkey Kong 64, Forsaken 64, Glover, Rayman 2, and Super Smash Bros. reportedly in the pipeline. While these leaks remain unconfirmed, they have generated optimism among long-time fans eager for more retro content.

A Chance to Shape the Future of NSO

For players eager to influence the future of Nintendo’s online service and get a sneak peek at what’s coming, the July playtest offers a unique opportunity. With limited spots available, interested gamers are encouraged to apply promptly once registration opens.

The Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program will run from July 28 through August 10, 2025, with applications accepted starting July 21 at 8:00 AM PT. Participants will be selected on a first-come, first-served basis.
