Rockstar’s hit game sees official release in the Gulf as gaming openness grows
After more than a decade of being banned, Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) is officially available in Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The highly popular open-world title, first released in 2013, had long been restricted in these Gulf countries due to its mature themes and violent content.
A shift in regional gaming policy
The Middle East has been making notable strides in embracing the global gaming industry. Saudi Arabia is set to host the inaugural Olympic eSports Games in 2027, signaling a broader shift toward recognizing gaming as a legitimate and valuable cultural and economic activity.
The lifting of GTA 5’s ban reflects this changing attitude, even though the game remains controversial for its depiction of crime, adult themes, and violence.
Age ratings and conditions
In Saudi Arabia, Grand Theft Auto 5 and its online component, GTA Online, are now available with a 21+ age rating. The UAE, however, has not specified an official age rating as part of its approval, leaving it unclear what restrictions, if any, apply there.
While the decision is surprising given the game’s long ban and mature content, it sets an important precedent for future titles in the franchise.
What it means for GTA’s future
The inclusion of Grand Theft Auto 5 in these previously restricted markets could lead to a noticeable uptick in sales, even years after its original release. It remains to be seen whether upcoming titles, such as the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto 6, will also receive approval in Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
For now, the unbanning of GTA 5 marks a milestone for gamers in the region and hints at further growth and acceptance of global gaming trends in the Middle East.
