Rust Loses Nearly 20% of Its Player Base in Just Six Months

Rust, the long-standing multiplayer survival title developed by Facepunch Studios, has seen a significant decline in player engagement over the past half-year. According to data from Steam Charts and SteamDB, Rust’s average concurrent player count has dropped by nearly 20%, falling from approximately 124,500 players in January 2025 to around 101,000 in May 2025.

The drop follows Rust’s historic all-time high of 262,284 concurrent players in January 2025—a peak fueled by the widely celebrated “Primitive” update, which brought medieval-themed content and fresh gameplay mechanics. But as the months passed, enthusiasm appeared to wane.

What Caused the Decline?

While Rust remains one of the most played games on Steam, the following factors may have contributed to this sudden downturn:

  • Gameplay Overhaul Backlash
Recent updates, particularly the removal of learnable recoil patterns, sparked backlash within the PvP community. Many veteran players criticized the changes, claiming they disrupted the competitive balance that had defined Rust for years.
  • Content Saturation
After more than a decade on the market, some players are showing signs of fatigue. Despite frequent updates, the core gameplay loop remains largely unchanged, leading to decreased engagement among long-term users.
  • Seasonal and Behavioral Trends
Post-holiday player drops are common in online games. The initial hype from January’s update may have simply worn off, bringing numbers back to a more sustainable average.

Still Holding Strong

Despite the downturn, Rust continues to perform well in terms of player count. In May 2025, the game still peaked above 129,000 concurrent users, demonstrating a healthy core audience and ongoing interest in its evolving world.

While a 20% drop may seem steep, it is not uncommon in the survival genre, where peaks and valleys in engagement are often tied to update cycles and content refreshes. Whether Facepunch can reignite growth with future patches remains to be seen.

For now, the game’s community—though slightly smaller—remains active, vocal, and deeply passionate.
