Major updates are coming to the game, bringing exciting new mechanics, balance changes, and items to the ever-evolving world of survival and creativity. From deployable siege weapons to artistic ice sculpting, here’s a rundown of what’s new and what to expect.
Siege Weapons: Breaking Barriers
The introduction of siege weapons is set to revolutionize Rust’s raiding dynamics. Here are the highlights:
- Battering Ram: A self-powered vehicle with a reinforced compartment. Once placed near a target wall, it delivers powerful strikes capable of damaging up to stone-tier structures.
- Catapult: Featuring three ammo types—boulder, incendiary, and explosive—this towable weapon provides a long-range option for sieges. It can be attached to horses for movement and requires manual aiming for maximum effectiveness.
- Siege Tower: A towering contraption with multiple floors and deployable drawbridges, ideal for scaling walls. While still in development, it’s shaping up to be a game-changer for base invasions.
- Ballista: A precision weapon offering bolts and firebolt options. While primarily for player targets, its structural damage potential is under refinement.
Shields for Defensive Combat
Rust will soon feature four shield types—wooden, reinforced wooden, improvised, and metal. These shields are equippable in backpack slots and activate when compatible weapons are drawn. Shields absorb damage while gradually degrading, adding a new layer of strategy to combat. Movement isn’t hindered when equipped, but aiming or throwing weapons is disabled.
Ice Sculpting: A Chill New Hobby
In December, players can look forward to crafting intricate ice sculptures. Using hand tools, players can carve blocks of ice into custom creations. While these sculptures eventually melt, the ability to lock edits offers some permanence. Unfortunately, chainsaws won’t be among the tools available—yet!
Notable Quality-of-Life Improvements
The patch also brings several tweaks to improve gameplay and address bugs:
- Hostile Warnings: Peacekeeper turrets now alert players with a visible hostile marker when in range.
- Node Sparkle Changes: Nodes will only sparkle after being hit for the first time, and the sparkle’s movement has been adjusted for better visibility.
- Player-Placed Elevators: Express buttons have been added to take users directly to the top or bottom, with elevator speeds now doubled.
- Wolf AI Overhaul: Wolves have received numerous bug fixes, reducing unexpected behaviors like random deaths or oversized packs. Similar updates for bears and other animals are planned.
Industrial and Item Adjustments
- Fridge slots increased from 30 to 48.
- Homing missiles added to loot pools for APC and attack helicopters.
- Dynamic vending machine pricing introduced for fish exchanges.
- Water pump requirements adjusted to accommodate new river systems.
Hazmat Plushy and More
A new collectible Hazmat Plushy is also on the way, offering 100% comfort to players nearby. This in-game craftable item is sure to be a hit among collectors.
Coming Soon
While many of these features are still in development and subject to change, the new mechanics and items are expected to roll out in early 2024. Stay tuned for updates and get ready to explore these exciting additions to Rust.
