Apex Legends recently faced significant backlash from its community over proposed changes to its battle pass structure. The developer, Respawn Entertainment, had announced plans to split the premium battle pass into two separate passes starting with the upcoming Season 22. This move sparked outrage among players, as it would require real-world money to unlock both passes, eliminating the option to use Apex Coins, the game’s premium currency.
Traditionally, Apex Legends’ battle passes have included Apex Coins as rewards, enabling players to earn enough currency through gameplay to purchase future passes. The proposed change threatened to remove this perk, effectively increasing the amount of money players would need to invest in the game.
Following the announcement, a large portion of the Apex Legends community voiced their displeasure, prompting Respawn Entertainment to reconsider its decision. On July 24, the Apex Legends team issued a statement on their official Twitter account, confirming that they would not proceed with the original battle pass changes.
In the statement, the team acknowledged the community’s concerns and admitted they could have handled the situation better. They assured players that in Season 22, they would still be able to purchase the premium battle pass for 950 Apex Coins. “We recognize that we could have handled the battle pass changes better–that’s on us,” the statement read.
When Season 22 launches on August 6, players will have the opportunity to earn the first premium battle pass by completing in-game challenges. The second split, occurring on September 17, will allow players to purchase the second premium battle pass using either Apex Coins or real money. Respawn plans to maintain this format going forward.
This response from Respawn Entertainment highlights the importance of player feedback and demonstrates the studio’s commitment to maintaining a positive relationship with its community.
