Pokemon Unite is expanding its roster once again, with Morpeko officially joining the game as a new Speedster. The addition arrives during a huge year for the Pokemon franchise, although it also comes alongside bittersweet news for the competitive Unite community.
While Pokemon Unite appeared at the 2026 Pokemon World Championships, this year will mark the end of the game’s World Championship support. Pokemon Unite itself isn’t shutting down, however. Development and updates are expected to continue, with several more playable Pokemon already lined up.
Morpeko Joins Pokemon Unite as a Speedster
Morpeko becomes the latest playable Pokemon added to Pokemon Unite and takes on the Speedster role.
That alone makes its arrival noteworthy.
Speedsters have traditionally received fewer additions than several other roles. Morpeko is only the second new Speedster introduced during 2026 and becomes the 12th Speedster overall.
Recent Speedster additions have included:
- Meowth – January 9, 2026
- Galarian Rapidash – 2025
- Meowscarada – 2023
- Morpeko – 2026
The gaps between these additions highlight how slowly the Speedster roster has expanded compared with Attackers and All-Rounders.
Morpeko and the upcoming Jolteon are also melee-focused Pokemon. Galarian Rapidash therefore remains particularly unusual as the only ranged Speedster currently available.
Morpeko Brings Its Full Belly and Hangry Forms
Morpeko isn’t simply another fast melee attacker.
Its Pokemon Unite kit incorporates one of the Pokemon’s most recognizable mechanics from Generation 8: switching between its Full Belly Mode and Hangry Mode.
That mechanic plays directly into Morpeko’s abilities.
One of its moves, Hungry Supercharge Wheel, changes its effects depending on Morpeko’s current form. Players will therefore need to pay attention to Morpeko’s state while fighting rather than simply cycling through abilities whenever their cooldowns finish.
It gives Morpeko an identity that closely matches how the Pokemon has traditionally been portrayed.
Pokemon Unite Has Added Nearly 20 Pokemon in 2026
Morpeko joins during one of Pokemon Unite’s busiest years yet.
Nearly 20 playable Pokemon have been added throughout 2026, with Legendary Pokemon receiving considerable attention during the franchise’s 30th anniversary celebrations.
Major additions have included:
- Articuno
- Zapdos
- Moltres
- Palkia
- Reshiram
- Yveltal
- Solgaleo
Pokemon Unite also celebrated the wider franchise anniversary with free rewards and a lengthy event built around several Legendary Pokemon.
However, the rapid roster expansion has done little to solve the game’s increasingly noticeable role imbalance.
Pokemon Unite’s Role Balance Is Getting Strange
Pokemon Unite currently has a huge number of offensive characters compared with its defensive and utility-focused options.
There are currently around 35 All-Rounders and 27 Attackers, while the Defender category contains only 13 Pokemon.
Speedsters aren’t much better represented.
Morpeko becomes only the 12th Pokemon in the category, while Supporter is expected to become the smallest role once Jolteon arrives, with just 12 Pokemon represented.
The difference is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
Adding new Pokemon keeps the roster fresh, but future updates could benefit from giving Defenders, Supporters and Speedsters more attention instead of continuing to heavily expand the already enormous All-Rounder and Attacker categories.
Toxtricity, Jolteon and Flareon Are Still Coming
Morpeko isn’t the end of Pokemon Unite’s current character pipeline.
Toxtricity, Jolteon and Flareon are all expected to arrive following Morpeko.
Exact release dates for Jolteon and Flareon have not yet been confirmed, so players will have to wait for additional announcements.
Jolteon is particularly interesting because it will join Morpeko in expanding the Speedster lineup. However, both Pokemon are melee Speedsters, meaning players hoping for more ranged options will have to keep waiting.
Pokemon Unite Is Leaving the World Championships
Unfortunately, Morpeko’s arrival comes during a much more emotional period for Pokemon Unite’s competitive community.
The game participated in the 2026 Pokemon World Championships, but this will be its final year receiving World Championship support.
That made the final matches before the closing ceremony especially bittersweet.
Pokemon Unite has developed its own competitive community over the years, and appearing alongside the wider Pokemon franchise at the World Championships gave its highest-level players a major international stage.
Losing that support doesn’t mean competitive Pokemon Unite immediately disappears, but it does represent the end of an important chapter.
Pokemon Unite Isn’t Shutting Down
The World Championship decision shouldn’t be confused with Pokemon Unite ending development.
The game is expected to continue receiving active support, with multiple Pokemon already confirmed or planned for future updates.
In fact, the period following September and October 2026 could become particularly important for Unite. Without the World Championship structure hanging over competitive balancing and scheduling, the developers may have more freedom to experiment with the game.
Whether that translates into better balancing, new modes, major gameplay changes or simply more Pokemon remains to be seen.
For now, Morpeko gives Speedster players something they haven’t received very often: a genuinely new option.
And with Toxtricity, Jolteon and Flareon still waiting in the pipeline, Pokemon Unite clearly isn’t finished expanding just yet.
