Rust September Update Hits Large Clans With New Upkeep Tax and Major Performance Boosts

Rust’s September 2026 update is a big one, bringing major changes to large clan upkeep, monument progression, vehicles, combat balance, server performance and several everyday gameplay systems.

One of the biggest additions directly targets large groups. Tool Cupboards now calculate an additional upkeep tax based on how many players are connected to a base. At the same time, Facepunch is introducing new Monument Blockers, a Medical Honey Bandage, improved modular car handling, stronger SAM Sites against drones and some substantial performance improvements.

Large Rust Clans Will Now Pay More Upkeep

The biggest balance change this month is the introduction of group-based Tool Cupboard upkeep scaling.

The first four players connected to a base receive no additional upkeep penalty. The next six players add 2% upkeep each, while every player beyond that adds another 4%.

For example, a base associated with six players receives a 4% upkeep increase, while a 12-player group receives a 20% increase. The system can scale all the way up to a maximum additional tax of 300%.

Rust counts more than simply the players currently authorized on the Tool Cupboard. It also considers players who were recently removed from the TC, players authorized on code locks and players who were removed from those locks during the previous 24 hours.

Facepunch says large groups are difficult to balance because sheer player numbers allow them to bypass many of Rust’s normal difficulty systems. However, the developer does not want to make large-group gameplay unviable.

Instead, the new system is intended to give large clans another logistical problem to solve without directly increasing the difficulty for smaller groups and solo players.

Monument Blockers Slow Down Early-Wipe Progression

Players rushing monuments immediately after a wipe will also have another obstacle to deal with.

New Monument Blockers have been added to monuments containing red keycard puzzle rooms. These blockers require significant damage before they can be destroyed.

Once removed, they will not respawn.

Some weaker versions can also be destroyed using melee weapons.

Facepunch does not expect Monument Blockers to dramatically change the overall progression speed. Instead, the intention is to make the earliest stages of a fresh wipe more interesting and prevent the first players on a server from immediately accessing some of the best monument loot.

Any blockers that survive for the first 24 hours will begin to decay.

High Quality Metal Ore Can Now Spawn Naturally

High Quality Metal becomes slightly easier to obtain this month.

Dedicated HQM ore nodes and collectables can now appear around the island.

However, Facepunch warns that they are extremely rare. Players searching for dedicated HQM nodes will apparently have the best chance of finding them inside Jungle areas.

Drone Marketplace Now Depends on the Power Plant

The Drone Marketplace is now connected to Rust’s recently introduced Power Plant system.

Drone deliveries will only function while the server community keeps the Power Plant operational.

When four or more fuses are active, the Marketplace battery begins charging. Once the battery reaches 50%, players can start making purchases.

As long as at least one fuse remains active, the battery will not lose charge. If it falls below 50%, however, the Drone Marketplace shuts down again.

This creates another server-wide objective and gives players a reason to keep the Power Plant running beyond its immediate local benefits.

New Medical Honey Bandage Added

Honey finally has another important use.

The new Medical Honey Bandage is available from Workbench Level 1 and is designed to sit between the standard Bandage and Medical Syringe.

It also gives players operating large bee farms another way to use excess honey instead of allowing huge reserves to simply accumulate.

Attack Helicopter Armour Can Now Be Destroyed

Facepunch has also responded to complaints surrounding the Attack Helicopter.

Its cockpit armour can now break away in stages as the helicopter takes damage.

The left panel falls away at 80% armour condition, followed by the right panel at 70% and the front panel at 60%. Destroying these sections gradually exposes the pilot and gunner, giving players on the ground a better chance of fighting back.

Armoured HABs receive a similar system.

Their armour panels begin breaking away between 90% and 60% condition depending on the affected section.

Rust Cars Can Finally Drift

Modular vehicles have received improved steering, turning and suspension.

Facepunch has also worked on making vehicles behave more consistently for players dealing with higher latency.

The more entertaining addition, however, is the new handbrake.

Pressing CTRL activates it, allowing players to attempt tighter turns, hairpin corners, doughnuts and proper drifting.

Rust may not suddenly become a racing game, but expect players to find creative uses for this almost immediately.

Radwater Gets Another Buff

Radwater has been strengthened again.

This time, the biggest improvement applies when Radwater is used with Sprinklers.

Radiation can now penetrate more armour types, making the system considerably more dangerous against heavily equipped players.

Hazmat suits remain an effective counter.

SAM Sites Are Much Better Against Drones

SAM Sites are receiving an important anti-drone improvement.

Missiles fired at hostile drones now travel faster and have a larger detonation fuse area.

That should make drones considerably harder to slip past defensive SAM installations.

Several Weapons and Items Have Been Rebalanced

The September update contains numerous smaller balancing changes.

Heavy Plate Helmets now suppress noise while being worn but cost more to craft. Heavy Plate Jackets and Pants create audible movement sounds, giving nearby enemies more information.

Semi-Pistols receive stronger damage falloff and increased crafting costs.

Several grenade types now have smaller maximum stack sizes, including F1 Grenades, Bee Grenades, Molotovs, Flashbangs and Beancans.

The Homing Launcher can also acquire targets faster.

SMG Bodies become slightly more common, while Rifle Bodies become slightly rarer.

Large Medkits now remove radiation in the same way as Medical Syringes.

Meanwhile, swamp trees provide significantly more wood, pies receive recipe and duration changes and players can now see how long items inside Composters will take to become fertilizer.

Flashlight and Arrows Get Visual Upgrades

The standard flashlight has received a complete visual refresh.

It now uses a higher-quality model, improved textures and new animations. Players can also right-click to switch it on or off.

Different inspect animations will play depending on whether the flashlight is currently active.

Wooden arrows have also received updated visuals, including new fletching and redesigned models intended to better fit Rust’s visual style.

Wood Armour Can Now Receive Workshop Skins

All four pieces of Wood Armour are now available as Workshop-skinnable items.

That includes the Wood Chestplate, Wood Armour Pants, Wood Armour Helmet and Wood Armour Gloves.

Community creators can download the associated model files and begin producing custom skins.

Crystal Assault Rifle DLC Added

A new premium Crystal Assault Rifle skin has also arrived.

The weapon comes with five colour variations and includes visible internal components.

Players can even see ammunition remaining inside the magazine while firing.

More Than 70 New Dropped Item Models

Dropped items should look considerably better after this update.

Rust previously represented many world items using the same burlap sack model.

More than 70 dedicated world models have now been introduced for objects including electrical components and clothing.

Facepunch says the new models were designed to offer comparable or better performance than the old burlap sack system.

Network Optimisation Could Reduce Server Overhead

Around 300 entities have also received updated networking ranges.

Some objects were previously being transmitted to players long before they could realistically see or interact with them.

Items such as signs, mushrooms and driftwood can now use a closer networking range, reducing unnecessary client and server traffic.

Facepunch says the change should not affect gameplay or distant objects that genuinely need to remain visible.

Random Skin Crafting Added

Players with large skin collections get a convenient new option.

Selecting the new Random skin setting automatically applies a random unlocked skin every time that particular item is crafted.

The preference is stored individually per item, meaning random skins can be enabled for certain crafts while keeping fixed skins selected for others.

New Navmesh Moves Closer to Becoming Default

Facepunch continues testing Rust’s redesigned navigation mesh.

The system has received additional performance improvements, reduced save sizes and bug fixes.

It will now be enabled on selected servers for wider testing.

If everything goes well, Facepunch wants to make the new navigation system the default through either a hotfix or the next major patch.

One potential consequence is that animals may become considerably better at navigating monuments and even entering player bases.

Server Restarts Should Stop Destroying Major Events

Server event saving has received another important improvement.

Previously, restarting a server during events such as Oil Rig could cause loot crates and hackable locked crates to disappear entirely.

Rust will now better preserve the state of Oil Rigs, Cargo Ships, Patrol Helicopters, Bradley encounters and Satellite Crash Sites across restarts.

That should make scheduled server restarts considerably less frustrating.

Water Treatment Plant Gets a Small Rework

Water Treatment Plant has received changes to its pressurized tank and gearbox system.

Each fully turned gearbox now provides three real-world hours of water flow.

Activating both can therefore provide up to six hours of operation.

Water output now scales with remaining tank pressure, while the number of water pipes around the map has been increased.

Facepunch estimates that one water pipe should now provide roughly the equivalent output of two pumps.

Rust Server Physics Performance Has Been Significantly Improved

Some of the most interesting changes are happening behind the scenes.

Facepunch has further customized Rust’s PhysX implementation and introduced a new broadphase system using a BVH structure.

The previous system became increasingly expensive as the number of colliders increased throughout a wipe.

The new implementation scales more closely with the number of changes occurring in the world instead.

Testing on one server reportedly showed roughly double the physics performance after the update.

More Rust Systems Are Moving Toward Multithreading

Facepunch has also been experimenting with ways to move additional scripting workloads away from the main Unity thread.

One early test involved Server Occlusion generation.

An initial process taking 44 seconds dropped to 22 seconds after several optimisations. Facepunch notes that not all of the improvement came directly from multithreading, with the more representative comparison being approximately 37 seconds down to 22 seconds.

The technology could eventually allow additional Rust systems to make better use of modern multicore processors.

Memory Usage Has Been Reduced

Several memory optimisations are also included.

Facepunch reduced memory overhead across many world objects and significantly lowered the resolution of some ambient occlusion textures.

Those texture changes alone save approximately 630MB of VRAM with almost no visible difference.

Early testing indicates total memory savings exceeding 0.5GB on some systems, although results will vary depending on hardware.

Vehicle Stutters Should Be Less Noticeable

Vehicles previously caused noticeable frame-time spikes when entering or leaving a player’s network range because they were completely destroyed and recreated.

Facepunch has now implemented vehicle pooling.

Instead of rebuilding a vehicle every time it becomes relevant again, Rust can temporarily disable and reuse existing objects.

The old behaviour could create stutters in the region of 20 to 30 milliseconds.

Facepunch expects the new pooling system to make these spikes substantially less noticeable, although additional work is still planned for vehicles such as player boats.

September Is Another Huge Rust Update

Rust’s September update is not built around one enormous headline feature.

Instead, Facepunch has touched almost every part of the game.

Large clans have a new economic problem to manage. Early monument rushing becomes slightly harder. Cars are more enjoyable to drive. Attack Helicopters are easier to counter. Drone trading now depends on server infrastructure, and dozens of smaller balance changes alter how everyday combat and survival works.

Perhaps more importantly, Facepunch continues investing heavily in performance.

Physics optimisation, memory reductions, vehicle pooling, networking improvements and additional multithreading experiments may not be as flashy as a new weapon or monument, but they could make a noticeable difference during long wipes on heavily populated servers.

For a game that continues to become more complicated with every update, those improvements may ultimately be some of the most valuable changes in September.
