Discord Introduces Paid DM Access for Non-Friends, Users React

A new update tied to Discord has sparked widespread discussion across the community, as users report a new restriction when attempting to message people outside of their friends list.

According to early reports, direct messages to non-friends are now locked behind a subscription tier, temporarily labeled as “Nitro+” in internal prompts. Users attempting to send a message are instead met with a notice suggesting they upgrade to unlock messaging access.

What the restriction includes

Based on user screenshots and reports, the change appears to introduce the following limitations:

  • Messaging non-friends requires an active subscription
  • Incoming messages from unknown users are automatically filtered or blocked
  • A prompt appears encouraging users to “upgrade for full communication access”

While Discord Inc. has not officially confirmed the rollout, the consistency in reports suggests the feature may be part of a limited test or staged release.

Community reaction builds fast

As expected, the reaction has been immediate.

Many users have expressed frustration over what they see as a fundamental change to how communication works on the platform. For communities, creators, and moderators who rely on open DMs for collaboration and support, the potential impact could be significant.

Others argue that the move could be aimed at reducing spam and unwanted messages, though critics say this comes at the cost of accessibility.

Monetization concerns resurface

This isn’t the first time monetization concerns have been raised around Discord. With expanding Nitro features and ongoing platform changes, users have grown increasingly cautious about what could become locked behind paywalls.

If implemented permanently, this shift could mark one of the most aggressive changes to Discord’s core functionality to date.

So… is it real?

No.

This change is not real, and no such feature has been confirmed by Discord.

Happy April Fools.
