Pokémon XD Re-Release Faces Major Stability Issues

The recent re-release of Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness on Nintendo Switch 2 is already facing serious technical problems, with players reporting frequent crashes and, more concerningly, complete save-data loss.

Originally launched in 2005 on the GameCube, the cult-favorite spin-off returned on March 18, 2026 through the Nintendo Classics service. While the return of the Orre region was welcomed by long-time fans, the current state of the game is quickly overshadowing that excitement.

Crashes Leading to Lost Progress

Reports from players indicate that the game can unexpectedly crash during gameplay, sometimes closing entirely. In several cases, these crashes have resulted in save files being erased—even after players used the in-game save system.

This issue is particularly severe given the game’s length. With a main story that can take around 30 hours to complete, losing hours of progress is a major setback and has already discouraged some players from continuing their playthroughs.

What makes the situation more frustrating is that the original GameCube version did not suffer from these problems, raising concerns about the quality of the re-release.

Nintendo Acknowledges the Problem

Nintendo has publicly acknowledged the issue and confirmed that it is currently under investigation. However, no timeline has been provided for when a fix can be expected.

In the meantime, players are being advised to use the “Quick Save” feature available through the Nintendo Classics pause menu. While not a permanent solution, this method may help reduce the risk of losing progress during crashes.

A Look Back at Pokémon XD

Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness remains a unique entry in the franchise. Set in the Orre region, the game follows protagonist Michael as he uses a Snag Machine to capture and purify Shadow Pokémon.

Unlike mainline entries, the game focuses heavily on double battles, offering a different strategic experience. Although it faced criticism at launch for reusing elements from Pokémon Colosseum and pacing issues, it has maintained a loyal fanbase over the years.

Concerns Ahead of Future Releases

The situation has broader implications beyond just Pokémon XD. Pokémon Colosseum is also planned to arrive on the Nintendo Classics service, and players are now questioning whether similar issues could affect future releases.

For now, players are left with two choices: rely on Quick Save to minimize potential losses or hold off on playing until a patch is released.

Waiting for a Fix

Until Nintendo provides a concrete solution, the re-release of Pokémon XD serves as a reminder that even classic titles are not immune to modern technical issues.
