Pokémon Legends Z-A Season 8 is officially underway and runs from March 12 through April 1, introducing a special competitive format focused heavily on the game’s newest Mega Evolutions.
This ranked season brings a tighter ruleset than previous seasons, limiting both the Pokémon pool and the items players can use. The goal is to create a more balanced competitive environment after earlier seasons faced criticism for allowing certain legendary Pokémon to dominate ranked battles.
Like other ranked seasons, players will also have the opportunity to earn exclusive Mega Stones and Mega Shards based on their performance on the ladder.
Pokémon Legends Z-A Season 8 Ranked Battle Rules
Season 8 introduces several important restrictions that significantly impact how teams are built.
Only Pokémon that received a new Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends Z-A or the Mega Dimension DLC are eligible for ranked battles during this season.
All Pokémon participating in ranked matches are automatically scaled to level 50, ensuring consistent competitive balance.
Players must build teams consisting of three different Pokémon, meaning duplicates are not allowed.
Item usage is also heavily restricted. The only items that can be held are Mega Stones introduced in Pokémon Legends Z-A or the Mega Dimension DLC. Every other held item is banned for this season.
This change removes many traditional competitive items and shifts the entire focus of battles toward Mega Evolution strategies.
Legendary Pokémon Restrictions
Several powerful legendary Pokémon have been removed from the competitive pool for Season 8.
The following Pokémon are not allowed in ranked matches:
Groudon
Kyogre
Mewtwo
However, Zygarde remains legal, which may allow it to become one of the most influential Pokémon in the current ranked meta.
Special Mega Evolution Restrictions
Certain Pokémon with multiple Mega forms have additional restrictions.
For Lucario, Garchomp, and Absol, players may only use their “Z” Mega Evolutions that were introduced in the Mega Dimension DLC.
These new Mega forms are expected to play a major role in shaping strategies throughout the season.

Season 8 Changes the Competitive Meta
Previous ranked seasons saw strong criticism from players who felt that legendary Pokémon dominated competitive play. Season 8 attempts to address those concerns by removing several major legendary Pokémon while introducing a more restrictive rule set.
With limited items and a Mega Evolution-focused format, Pokémon such as Mega Garchomp Z, Mega Greninja, and Mega Baxcalibur are expected to become key picks in the evolving competitive meta.
Because the season only runs until April 1, players have a limited window to climb the ladder and earn the exclusive rewards tied to Pokémon Legends Z-A Season 8.
