Alongside reveals such as a new Kena sequel, cooperative multiplayer details for Ghost of Yotei, updates tied to Resident Evil Requiem, a PC version of Death Stranding 2, and a newly announced John Wick game, Project Windless emerged as one of the showcase’s most distinctive original projects.
Set in a vast open world and designed exclusively for PlayStation 5, the game draws inspiration from the Korean fantasy novel series The Bird That Drinks Tears. Rather than retelling the books’ narrative, however, the story takes place thousands of years earlier, exploring a formative era in the same universe that has largely remained unexplored in existing lore. This prequel framing allows the developers to expand the setting while maintaining thematic ties to the source material.
Players take control of a Rekon, a towering humanoid-bird warrior belonging to a nomadic race defined by exceptional physical power, speed, and reach. Krafton emphasizes that the Rekon are not simply brute-force fighters; their culture, solitary nature, and emotional traits all influence gameplay and narrative direction. One notable vulnerability is a deep fear of water, suggesting environmental hazards and psychological tension could play a meaningful role in both exploration and combat encounters.
Combat design centers on a one-versus-many fantasy, where players may face dozens or even hundreds of enemies simultaneously. To support this scale, the studio is implementing what it describes as mass technology, enabling large groups of foes to move dynamically, coordinate attacks, and react intelligently to player behavior. Rather than treating enemies as passive targets, encounters are intended to require situational awareness, adaptation, and tactical positioning.
Despite the strong debut, key release details remain unconfirmed. No launch window has been announced, and PlayStation 5 is currently the only verified platform. The reveal also arrives during a complex period for Krafton’s broader portfolio. The publisher is simultaneously managing development on Subnautica 2, which shifted from a planned 2025 launch to 2026 following internal controversy and legal disputes tied to leadership changes at Unknown Worlds. A final release date for that project has yet to be provided.
For now, Project Windless stands as an ambitious new entry in the open-world action RPG space, blending large-scale combat systems with deep worldbuilding rooted in Korean fantasy literature. Additional gameplay details and a clearer release timeline are expected in future updates.
