Shortly after Hytale entered early access in mid-January, players began reporting an unexpected issue surrounding in-game usernames. According to multiple community posts, several unique usernames that were already claimed appeared to be reassigned to streamers or content creators following support requests.
The situation quickly sparked backlash, with players questioning whether preferential treatment was being given during the game’s early access period — a phase meant to establish trust between developers and the growing player base.
Reports of Reassigned Usernames
Players shared examples where previously owned usernames were replaced or altered:
- A YouTuber who originally used “The_Horizon” later displayed the username “Horizon,” a handle that another player had already claimed.
- Content creator MashClash received the username “Mash” after contacting support.
- One affected player reported being forced into a randomized fallback name such as “CoralShield434.”
These reports fueled concerns that established creators could bypass standard username ownership rules. ( and to be fair, i do think that creators should have fist dips on names, as its their brand, its their recognition when they meet other players in game and to prevent 5 year old gangsters, asking for a few hundred bucks as he had stolen your name. )
Developer Response and Policy Clarification
Following the backlash, Simon Collins-Laflamme, founder of Hypixel Studios, addressed the situation publicly.
He stated that:
- Creators are not allowed to claim usernames that are already taken.
- Support staff may forward a request to the current owner, but the owner has full right to ignore or decline.
- Usernames should only be forcibly removed in cases involving profanity or clear violations of the terms of service.
Collins-Laflamme confirmed that the issue was being personally investigated to determine how the transfers occurred.
Creators Respond and Names Are Returned
After the issue gained visibility, several creators acknowledged the controversy.
MashClash later confirmed that the username “Mash” had been returned, sharing proof that the exchange was resolved amicably. Other involved creators also indicated willingness to revert names, and reports of forced transfers appear to have stopped once the matter became public.
While the incident caused frustration, it also showed how community pressure can lead to quick corrective action during early access.
Important Clarification: Separate Username Incident Not Linked to Hytale
Alongside this situation, our own community experienced a separate username issue that is not connected to Hytale or Hypixel Studios.
Our name was taken by another user on a different platform. That individual later approached us directly, demanding a large financial payout in exchange for handing over the username. We declined the request, as we do not support pay-to-claim behavior or name extortion.
To be absolutely clear:
This incident did not involve Hytale, its developers, or its support systems in any way.
It was a completely unrelated case but highlights a broader problem with username ownership across online platforms.
Why Username Ownership Matters
Username identity plays a major role in online communities — especially for creators, community projects, and long-standing groups. When names appear unstable or transferable without consent, it undermines trust and can create fear around long-term account investment.
The Hytale situation demonstrates how sensitive this issue is, particularly during early access when players are deciding whether to fully commit to the game.
Looking Ahead
Hypixel Studios’ rapid acknowledgment and investigation helped calm part of the backlash, but the incident serves as an early warning. Clear systems, transparent enforcement, and consistent communication will be critical as Hytale’s player base continues to grow.
For now, the studio maintains that username ownership remains protected — and that no player should lose their identity without cause.
