Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade is confirmed to be one of the largest third-party releases on the Nintendo Switch 2, and players planning to pick it up may need to free a significant amount of storage. Square Enix has officially revealed that the game will require between 90 and 99 GB, depending on the edition.
Large File Sizes Confirmed
Square Enix clarified the storage requirements across editions, noting the following ranges:
- Standard Edition: 90–95 GB
- Limited Early Purchase Edition: 93.8–99 GB — includes a port of the original Final Fantasy VII
With the Switch 2 launching with 256 GB of internal storage, Remake Intergrade will consume roughly 35–40% of the system’s available space right out of the box. This puts it well above many other large third-party titles planned for the console.
Larger Than Most Switch 2 Releases
Compared to its PlayStation 5 version, which sits around 81 GB, the Switch 2 release is notably heavier. It also surpasses several major upcoming titles on the platform, including:
- Apex Legends – 78.5 GB
- Split Fiction – 73 GB
- Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition – 59 GB
These comparisons underline a trend that Switch 2 owners may feel quickly: premium third-party titles are going to demand a lot of space.
Mandatory Installation for Physical Buyers
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will ship on a Game Key Card, which means that even players who buy the physical version will still need to install the full game. Current reports suggest that developers have only two physical media options on Switch 2:
- Game Key Card, which requires full installation
- 64 GB game card, which cannot accommodate titles approaching the 90–100 GB range
This limitation prevents Square Enix from fitting Remake Intergrade onto a traditional cartridge, even if they intended to.
Storage Expansion May Become Essential
For many players, the most practical solution will be purchasing a microSD Express Card to expand storage. Given that future entries in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy are also coming to the Switch 2, storage strain is likely to grow even further as libraries expand.
Release Date and Extra Features
Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade launches on January 22, 2026 for Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S. The release introduces an extremely accessible “Streamlined Progression” difficulty mode designed for players who want to experience Cloud’s journey with minimal challenge.
As file sizes rise and more ambitious titles arrive on the Switch 2, storage management may become a routine part of ownership—especially for players planning to keep several AAA games installed at once.
