Welcome to the Dark Place is a new psychological horror game from Zeekerss, the developer behind the viral co-op hit Lethal Company. Available now for free on Steam, the game has quickly gained Very Positive reviews for its chilling atmosphere and minimalist design that manages to deliver genuine terror.
Returning to the Roots of Horror
While Lethal Company made Zeekerss a household name among horror fans, the developer has been crafting unsettling experiences for nearly a decade—long before their success on Steam. Their latest creation, Welcome to the Dark Place, marks a return to those roots, blending text-based storytelling with deeply psychological elements.
The game’s eerie tone and slow-building tension evoke strong Silent Dark vibes, one of Zeekerss’ first viral horror projects released on Roblox in 2016. That game was even nominated as one of the platform’s best single-player titles of the year.
Eight Years in the Making
Zeekerss revealed that development on Welcome to the Dark Place began as early as 2017, shortly after Silent Dark gained traction. The project was originally meant to be their first full game outside of Roblox. However, the developer scrapped the early version in 2019 and rebuilt it from the ground up—the version fans can now experience today.
“Development started around 2017 as my first game outside Roblox,” wrote Zeekerss, adding that the 2019 iteration became the foundation for much of their later work, including The Upturned, another fan-favorite survival horror title on Steam.
Text-Based Horror That Stays With You
Unlike traditional horror games, Welcome to the Dark Place relies on text-driven gameplay and sound effects to immerse players in a nightmare-inspired world. The goal is to escape by making the right decisions during a series of tense and unsettling events.
Players have praised the game’s ability to create a deeply frightening experience using minimal visuals, with some calling it a “masterpiece in simplicity.” The unsettling audio, combined with the psychological writing style, has made it a standout among recent indie horror releases.
