A new phishing scam is making the rounds among RuneScape players, with scammers attempting to steal account credentials through a fake security alert email. The message, titled “Did you teleport to Boston?”, is designed to look like it was sent from Jagex Activity, the legitimate source for RuneScape account notifications — but it’s entirely fake.
Players report that the email warns of a suspicious login attempt supposedly from Boston, urging them to verify their account through a provided link. However, this link leads to a fraudulent login page that collects usernames, passwords, and even two-factor authentication codes.
Spotting the Fake
While the scammers put effort into copying Jagex’s design, their poor execution gives them away almost instantly. The sender’s address is not from an official Jagex domain, and the email’s formatting, tone, and grammar reveal it’s a pathetic attempt to trick unsuspecting users.
The fake message typically includes:
- A suspicious subject line: “Did you teleport to Boston?”
- A header mimicking Jagex Activity branding.
- A fraudulent verification link disguised as a Jagex page.
- Generic text that doesn’t reference your username or linked accounts.
Protecting Your RuneScape Account
Jagex has repeatedly emphasized that it never asks players to verify accounts through external links. Official communications are only sent through @jagex.com addresses, and legitimate login activity can be checked through the official RuneScape website.
If you receive this or a similar email:
- Do not click any links or open attachments.
- Check the sender’s address carefully.
- Report the email as phishing and delete it immediately.
- Change your password if you interacted with the link.
A Familiar Yet Failing Tactic
Phishing scams in the RuneScape community are nothing new, but this latest one shows just how desperate some scammers have become. Even the email’s title — “Did you teleport to Boston?” — exposes the absurdity of the attempt.
While the design may trick inattentive players, those who take even a moment to double-check will see right through it. As always, the best defense remains skepticism and vigilance.
In short: If you see a message claiming to be from Jagex with the subject “Did you teleport to Boston?”, don’t fall for it. It’s not a security alert — it’s just another scammer trying (and failing) to get into your account.
