Following a second wave of Shiny Koraidon and Miraidon distribution codes for Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, GameStop has clarified that The Pokémon Company (TPCi), not the retailer, imposed the strict limits on how many codes each store could distribute.
According to GameStop, every location received around 50 codes per store during the first wave and another 50 in the second wave that began on October 4. Unlike the first wave, which used collectible cards, the second round featured codes printed directly on receipts. GameStop emphasized that it has been working closely with TPCi to try to get additional codes for players before the event concludes on October 15, though codes remain limited to one per customer.
Fans Frustrated as Codes Run Out Nationwide
The event marks the only official way to obtain Shiny Koraidon in Pokémon Violet and Shiny Miraidon in Pokémon Scarlet, as both Legendary Pokémon remain Shiny-locked during regular gameplay. With demand far exceeding supply, many GameStop stores across the U.S. quickly ran out of codes, leaving numerous trainers empty-handed.
This shortage led to widespread frustration among fans, some of whom accused GameStop of poor planning. Meanwhile, scalpers began listing codes on eBay, further fueling backlash within the Pokémon community.
Mixed Reactions and Calls for The Pokémon Company to Respond
GameStop’s clarification received mixed reactions online. While some players appreciated the transparency, others questioned the decision to limit stores to just 50 codes at a time — especially when other regions reportedly faced no such restrictions.
Players are now calling on The Pokémon Company to address GameStop’s claims and to consider digital Mystery Gift distributions in the future, which could prevent scalping and ensure fair access for all players.
As of now, The Pokémon Company has not issued an official response to GameStop’s statement. However, between the ongoing Shiny distribution controversy and a bug affecting the current Paradox Tera Raid event, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have faced a turbulent few weeks. How TPCi will respond remains to be seen.
