The Pokémon Trading Card Game’s new Mega Evolution era has only just begun, but rumors are already swirling about what’s next. Following the launch of Mega Evolution cards like Mega Gardevoir and Mega Lucario, the game is preparing for a steady stream of expansions. With the upcoming Phantasmal Flames set featuring Mega Charizard X this November, attention has now turned to the third expansion — and speculation points to one of the most iconic Mega Pokémon of all time.
Storm Emeralda Expansion Rumored
Recent store listings have seemingly confirmed the title of the third Mega Evolution-era set as Storm Emeralda, with Mega Zygarde ex named as one of its featured cards. The expansion is currently expected to release in Japan in January 2026, setting the stage for its global launch later in the year.
The name “Emeralda” has sparked speculation that the set could highlight Mega Rayquaza ex, one of the most legendary Mega Pokémon in both the games and TCG history. If confirmed, this would mark the return of a powerhouse that once dominated tournaments.
Mega Rayquaza’s Dominant Legacy
Mega Rayquaza is no stranger to competitive success. When it first appeared in the Roaring Skies expansion, its deck quickly became a top-tier threat, even placing in the Top 8 of the 2016 US National Championships. In the video games, its overwhelming power also forced restrictions in competitive play, further cementing its reputation as a near-unstoppable force.
A reintroduction into the TCG would not only be a nostalgic callback but could also shake up the competitive scene once more, depending on how it is balanced in the modern format.
What’s Next for the Mega Evolution Era
Players won’t need to wait until 2026 for new content, however. The next major expansion, Phantasmal Flames, launches worldwide on November 14, 2025, introducing Mega Charizard X, along with other Mega Pokémon such as Mega Heracross, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Gengar.
Additionally, Japan’s Mega Dream ex set is bringing in a brand-new card rarity, Mega Attack Rare, adding even more excitement to the Mega Evolution revival.
With multiple major expansions on the way and the possibility of Mega Rayquaza’s triumphant return, 2025 and beyond look to be an exhilarating era for Pokémon TCG fans.
