Discord is once again facing legal and public scrutiny after being named in connection with a South Jersey lawsuit involving the exploitation of a minor. The case, filed in Camden County Superior Court, centers on a now 14-year-old girl who was allegedly targeted by an adult posing as a child.
According to the complaint, the initial contact took place on Roblox, but the abuse escalated on Discord. The platform was allegedly used to exchange graphic messages and sexual images between the predator and the victim.
Discord’s Silence
Action News reported that Discord was contacted for comment on the case but did not respond. This silence has raised concerns about how the company addresses accusations of child exploitation, particularly as the platform continues to be widely used by younger audiences for gaming-related communication.
Broader Legal Pressure
This is not the first time Discord has come under fire. In April, the state of New Jersey filed its own lawsuit against Discord, citing failures to prevent exploitation and other harmful activities on the platform. That case accused Discord of creating conditions where predators could operate with little oversight.
Combined with the new lawsuit linking Discord to Roblox exploitation, the company faces growing pressure to prove it is capable of protecting minors.
Push for Systemic Change
The family’s attorney, Sara Beller of Dolman Law Group, stressed that legal action is intended not just to seek compensation but to force platforms like Roblox and Discord to adopt stronger safety measures.
“In addition to monetary compensation for our clients, we’re really trying to force systemic change on these platforms,” Beller said.
With Roblox emphasizing its rollout of new safety features and Discord remaining silent, critics argue that both companies need to move faster to address ongoing risks to children online.
