Family Sues Roblox Over Alleged Failure to Protect Child in Grooming and Kidnapping Case

Ongoing Concerns Over Roblox Safety Measures

Roblox, one of the most popular online gaming platforms among children, is once again facing legal scrutiny over player safety. A family in Des Moines, Iowa, has filed a lawsuit claiming that the company failed to protect their 13-year-old daughter, who was reportedly groomed and kidnapped by a predator she met on the platform.

The lawsuit alleges that Roblox falsely markets itself as a safe environment for children while not implementing safety measures to their fullest potential. This incident adds to a growing list of controversies surrounding the platform’s ability to safeguard its youngest users.

Details of the Incident

According to court filings, the victim believed she was interacting with another teenager within Roblox. In reality, the person was a 37-year-old man who allegedly kidnapped her in West Des Moines on May 24, 2025. The suspect is currently in custody and faces four counts of statutory rape, with more charges possible. The case also includes allegations of sexual abuse and trafficking.

The legal team representing the family claims they also represent more than 400 other clients with similar stories involving Roblox. They argue that the company possesses tools such as age verification, parental controls, and content monitoring but fails to enforce them effectively, allegedly to avoid reducing user engagement.

Roblox’s Response and Previous Controversies

Roblox has issued a statement confirming its policy to refrain from commenting on ongoing litigation, while reiterating its commitment to the safety and well-being of its community.

However, criticism toward the platform’s leadership has been mounting. The company’s CEO previously suggested that parents concerned about safety should simply not allow their children to play Roblox — a remark made before the incidents referenced in this lawsuit. More recently, he has spoken about introducing age-restricted dating features, a proposal that has drawn backlash given ongoing concerns about the reliability of age gates.

A Broader Pattern of Issues

This is not the first time Roblox has faced legal action related to child safety. Critics argue that while the company has taken steps to verify user ages and limit contact between adults and minors, these measures come too late for many victims.

One of the attorneys involved in the current case described the changes as “too little, too late,” pointing to the history of similar incidents that have already occurred on the platform. As the lawsuit moves forward, it could reignite debates over how online gaming platforms balance safety enforcement with user engagement — and whether current safeguards are enough to protect children in digital spaces.
