Gears of War: E-Day and State of Decay 3 Reportedly Coming to PS5 as Microsoft Expands Multi-Platform Strategy

Two major Xbox console exclusives, Gears of War: E-Day and State of Decay 3, are reportedly in development for PlayStation 5, marking another potential milestone in Microsoft’s growing push toward a broader third-party publishing model.

The information comes via a report citing multiple developer resumes, suggesting that Microsoft’s shift away from exclusivity will soon bring even more of its iconic franchises to rival platforms.

Developer CVs Point to PS5 Ports

According to the report, a developer working on Gears of War: E-Day listed the PS5 as a target platform on their resume. The game, set as a prequel to the original Gears of War trilogy, was already announced with a planned 2026 release. However, no official confirmation has yet been made regarding whether the PS5 version will launch on the same day as the Xbox and PC versions.

Similarly, another developer affiliated with Undead Labs identified the PS5 as a platform for State of Decay 3. The open-world zombie survival title was initially expected in 2025 but has now reportedly been pushed to 2026. Like E-Day, it remains unclear whether State of Decay 3 will be a simultaneous release across all platforms or follow a staggered rollout.

Microsoft’s Multi-Platform Push Continues

The potential arrival of these two high-profile titles on PS5 reflects Microsoft’s expanding cross-platform strategy, first hinted at in early 2024. Over the past year, the company has brought more than a dozen previously Xbox-exclusive or Xbox-first games to other platforms.

This includes:

  • Hi-Fi Rush (PS5 release in March 2024)
  • Sea of Thieves (PS5 release in April 2024)
  • Grounded and Pentiment (both available on Switch, PS4, and PS5)
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Forza Horizon 5 (PS5 ports arriving in 2025)
  • Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 (coming to PS5 in August 2025)

Microsoft’s earlier reveal of Gears of War: Reloaded, a remaster of the original game, included confirmation of a PS5 version launching day-one on August 26, 2025 — the first official PlayStation release for the franchise. This paved the way for further speculation about E-Day also crossing platform lines.

What’s Next for Xbox on PlayStation?

Several other Xbox-published titles are also rumored to be heading to PS5, including Avowed, South of Midnight, Starfield, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Halo: The Master Chief Collection, and Rare Replay. If confirmed, these moves would mark one of the most significant transformations in Microsoft’s gaming strategy to date.

While Gears of War and State of Decay have historically been staples of the Xbox brand, their potential migration to PlayStation may signal a broader change in how Microsoft approaches platform exclusivity in the years ahead. Whether these titles launch day-one on PS5 or follow a delayed release model remains to be seen.

For now, fans can look forward to August 26, 2025, when Gears of War: Reloaded officially hits the PS5 — possibly setting the tone for many more to follow.
