Minecraft modpack – Cave Horror Project 1 Review

By Staff member koyub – The experience started off brilliantly: spawning in at night, surrounded by eerie sounds, rustling all around you, and small, unsettling creatures that immediately began to harass us.

We found ourselves right in a terracotta biome, which turned out to be a great starting point. There was a wide-open area, seemingly perfect for building in peace. But that peace didn’t last long — it turned out to be the spiders’ domain.

As someone with arachnophobia, I have to say: the spiders in this mod are impressively, and horrifyingly, realistic. The way their legs move, their varying sizes — some lightning-fast, others enormous — really got under my skin. Some even spawn swarms of babies when they attack, and the area quickly became overrun.

The horror elements are beautifully done. The music kicks in at just the right moments, the creepy cave ambience keeps you on edge, and you’re constantly hearing unsettling details: leaves rustling, random footsteps, or sometimes… nothing but an eerie silence.

The jump scares are particularly effective. In one instance, I was immobilized while the monster vanished — only to reappear right in my face the moment I could move again. In another, the jump scare hit after being killed, which was a surprising and clever touch.

The early game is brutal, but for me, that’s part of the fun. The main quests are manageable, and there are even hidden quests scattered throughout. Finding one by accident was a highlight — it immediately motivated me to hunt for the others.

As you progress, the quests become more challenging and push you to fully explore — from caves to the overworld and even into the Nether. Some monsters can even break blocks or open doors to get inside, which really raised the stakes. Luckily, you can counter this by crafting reinforced blocks and using the SecurityCraft mod. This was my first time trying that mod — it took a little time to figure out, but once set up, it worked wonderfully. Only one type of monster still managed to get through, and that’s because it can teleport directly to you.

One thing to note: whoever places the security blocks needs to be someone who’s online most often, as only the owner can break them or program keycards for the doors.

We’re not finished yet — we’re still searching for the giant moth and hornet, which means delving deeper into caves and overworld areas to unlock the next chapter.

This mod has completely captured my interest, and I can’t wait to keep exploring everything it has to offer.
