Xbox is continuing its multiplatform expansion, and this time it’s bringing Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 to PlayStation 5 — along with a long-awaited next-gen upgrade for the original Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice. Starting August 12, 2025, both titles will be available for PS5 players, with the remaster of the first game offered as a free upgrade to existing owners.
A Long-Awaited Return
Originally released in 2017 as a PS4 exclusive, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice earned critical acclaim for its compelling narrative, nuanced portrayal of mental health, and immersive audio design. But after Microsoft acquired developer Ninja Theory in 2018, PlayStation fans were left behind — especially when a next-gen version of Hellblade launched exclusively for Xbox Series X|S in 2021.
Now, as Microsoft shifts more of its first-party content to PlayStation, PS5 players are finally getting the enhanced version of Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, just in time for the sequel’s launch.
Free Upgrade for Existing Owners
In a welcome move, Ninja Theory is offering the upgraded version of Senua’s Sacrifice as a free download for anyone who already owns the game on PS5. The update brings modern graphical enhancements including:
- Ray-traced reflections
- Improved lighting and shadows
- Higher-resolution textures
- Up to 4K visuals
- 120fps performance mode
This pro-consumer gesture ensures longtime fans don’t have to repurchase the game to experience its best version on current-gen hardware.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 Lands on PS5
Meanwhile, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is set to make its PS5 debut on the same day. Initially released in 2024 as an Xbox and PC exclusive, the sequel picks up where the first game left off, continuing Senua’s emotional journey through a cinematic, Norse-inspired world.
The PS5 version of Hellblade 2 will include the much-requested 60fps performance mode, aligning it with recent updates on Xbox Series X and PC. Players can purchase the game as a standalone title or opt for the Deluxe Edition, which includes the remastered first game and its original soundtrack for $70.
Interestingly, the Deluxe Edition is exclusive to PS5 at launch, with Microsoft likely steering Xbox and PC users toward Game Pass access for both titles.
Pre-Orders Now Live
Both the standard and Deluxe versions of Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 are now available for pre-order on PS5. With a remastered original bundled in and a sequel optimized for high performance, Ninja Theory’s long-awaited return to PlayStation is shaping up to be one of this summer’s highlights for narrative-driven game fans.
Whether you’re new to the Hellblade saga or revisiting Senua’s world, August 12 will offer the definitive experience on PS5.
