PlayStation executives have made it clear that the company is remaining “thoughtful” when it comes to releasing exclusive titles on other platforms. While the gaming giant has already ported hits like Marvel’s Spider-Man and The Last of Us to PC, many of its biggest franchises remain locked to PlayStation consoles—at least for now.
In a recent fireside chat, Sony Interactive Entertainment president Hideaki Nishino and Studio Business Group head Hermen Hulst discussed the company’s strategy around exclusivity. According to Hulst, Sony is “taking a very measured, a very deliberate approach” to expanding beyond its own ecosystem, especially when it comes to its narrative-driven, single-player games.
“They’re such a point of differentiation for the PlayStation console,” Hulst said, describing these titles as “real showcases of the performance.”
This approach isn’t just about protecting PlayStation’s hardware appeal—it’s also about timing. For example, The Last of Us Part 2 launched in 2020 but didn’t arrive on PC until 2025, years after its original release. Sony appears willing to explore multiplatform releases, but on a schedule that still prioritizes its consoles.
Nishino added that PlayStation is closely monitoring how players interact with their games, saying the company wants to provide “good experiences” based on player behavior. While this doesn’t confirm a wave of ports is coming soon, it does suggest Sony is listening to the market and isn’t ruling anything out.
A Shift in the Industry?
Game exclusivity has long been a divisive topic among players. With platforms like Xbox embracing cross-platform strategies and Nintendo slowly experimenting with more flexible publishing, Sony’s slow-but-steady shift mirrors a broader industry trend. As competition between the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2 intensifies, even the most protective companies are reconsidering how they define “exclusive.”
While Sony isn’t promising a full multiplatform pivot anytime soon, fans on other systems may have more to look forward to in the coming years—if the timing and circumstances are right.
