Nintendo Switch 2 Becomes Fastest-Selling Console in Company History With Over 3.5 Million Units Sold

Nintendo has officially confirmed that the Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console in the company’s history, with more than 3.5 million units sold globally in just four days. The new hybrid console launched on June 5, and its record-breaking performance has already surpassed the early success of its predecessor.

According to a press release on June 10, Nintendo attributed this milestone to the enhanced hardware of the Switch 2 and the popularity of the Mario Kart World launch bundle, which helped push early adoption even further. The company noted that these sales reflect all available console configurations sold worldwide, including region-specific units in Japan offered at lower prices.

Hardware Boost and Scalper Prevention Fuel Strong Launch

The Switch 2 arrived following weeks of frenzied pre-orders and high consumer demand. Nintendo and its retail partners worked closely to minimize scalping and improve distribution, ensuring stock reached as many players as possible. Although physically larger than the original model, the Switch 2 features a significant leap in technology, with an upgraded Nvidia processor and DLSS upscaling support. These enhancements allow select original Switch titles—such as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and Super Mario Odyssey—to receive free graphical and performance upgrades.

A Historic Launch Compared to the Original Switch

To put this launch into perspective, the original Nintendo Switch sold 2.7 million units in under a month after its debut in 2017. That console went on to become one of the best-selling systems of all time, trailing only the Nintendo DS and Sony’s PlayStation 2. The Switch 2, by contrast, reached 3.5 million units sold in just four days, setting a new benchmark for Nintendo hardware.

A Promising Road Ahead

Nintendo is not slowing down. With highly anticipated exclusives such as Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond set to launch later in 2025, the Switch 2’s momentum is expected to continue through the summer and beyond. While long-term sales performance remains to be seen, retailers are restocking frequently to meet ongoing demand.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is off to an impressive start—and if the company can keep up this pace, it may well join its predecessor among the top-selling consoles in gaming history.
