A growing number of Grand Theft Auto fans are calling on Rockstar Games to drop the Heritage character customization system in GTA 6 Online in favor of a more traditional character creator. While the system was considered innovative when introduced with GTA Online back in 2013, many players now feel it’s outdated and unnecessarily restrictive.
The Heritage system requires players to select two virtual “parents” for their character, with appearances then determined by adjusting sliders for parental resemblance and skin tone. While this feature allowed for a degree of realism and even included familiar faces like Claude from GTA 3 and John Marston from Red Dead Redemption, it lacked the depth and control modern players have come to expect from character creation tools.
Reddit user OfficialSmokDoll reignited the debate by posting their frustration with the system, saying they prefer more granular customization. Their post quickly climbed to the front page of the r/GTA6 subreddit in mid-April 2025, amassing hundreds of upvotes and sparking a heated discussion.
Many fans echoed the sentiment, arguing that full character customization had been standard in other games long before GTA Online launched. Others suggested that while the Heritage system could remain as an optional feature, Rockstar should offer a more conventional alternative for players who prefer detailed personalization.
As of now, Rockstar has not confirmed any details about GTA 6 Online, including its character creation system. The studio has remained silent since the game’s highly anticipated reveal trailer dropped in December 2023.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is still on track for a late 2025 release on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Publisher Take-Two Interactive is expected to provide a new update during its next quarterly earnings call on May 15—and fans are hoping it includes more clarity on the future of GTA 6 Online.
