Pokemon GO’s Max Raids: A Mixed Bag for Players

Since the release of Max Raids in Pokemon GO, an increasing number of players appear to be steering clear of the feature, citing a lack of adequate rewards compared to the effort required. Max Raids, inspired by the popular battles in Pokemon Sword and Shield, debuted in the mobile game in September 2024, aiming to introduce Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon to trainers in augmented reality. Yet, the enthusiasm has been somewhat restrained, as players feel the rewards fall short of the challenges these battles present.

Initially, the feature seemed promising, allowing large groups—10 to 40 players—to join forces against massive Pokemon, including the Kanto and Galar starters and a few Gigantamax variants. However, many players report frustration with the difficulty level that doesn’t scale according to the party size, often resulting in unsuccessful raids even with maximum participants.

Moreover, enhancing Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon’s moves requires Max Particles, and leveling them up demands species-specific candy. Unfortunately, for many of these rare Pokemon, players struggle to collect the necessary candy due to limited in-game availability. This restriction has led to discontent, as players face hurdles in building a strong Dynamax roster.

Perhaps the biggest drawback is the limited utility of Dynamax Pokemon. They are only effective in Max Battles against other Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon, reducing their general appeal for Pokemon GO‘s wider gameplay. Though these Pokemon can attract others at designated Power Spots, many players feel this feature isn’t compelling enough to justify the effort, especially given the niche role Dynamax and Gigantamax Pokemon play in the game.

As Pokemon GO continues to evolve, it remains to be seen whether Niantic will address these issues to make Max Raids a more rewarding experience for the community.
