Final Fantasy XIV players hoping to upgrade their homes will have to wait longer, as Square Enix has confirmed another delay to its long-awaited housing interior expansion feature. The improvement will now arrive with Patch 8.1, following the release of the upcoming Evercold expansion in February 2027.
The announcement came during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Tokyo, where producer and director Naoki Yoshida shared new information about the MMORPG’s future. Although the event revealed several exciting additions, the latest housing delay may disappoint players who have waited years for greater customization options.
Final Fantasy XIV Housing Expansion Pushed Back to Patch 8.1
The housing interior expansion feature originally surfaced in 2024, with Square Enix planning to introduce it during the Dawntrail update cycle. However, development delays have repeatedly pushed the feature further into the future.
The system will allow players to change the interior size of their homes without purchasing a larger housing plot. For example, someone who owns a small house could upgrade its interior to match the dimensions of a large property.
This improvement would also increase the available furnishing capacity, allowing homeowners to create more elaborate designs without needing to compete for expensive or difficult-to-obtain larger plots.
Players would effectively gain access to more interior space while keeping their existing property and exterior appearance.
However, the feature will not arrive alongside Evercold’s initial release. Instead, Square Enix has moved it to Patch 8.1, which currently has no confirmed launch date.
New Housing Interface Will Make Decorating Easier
Despite the delay, Square Enix has additional improvements planned for Final Fantasy XIV’s housing system.
Patch 8.1 will introduce a redesigned housing interface intended to make decorating more accessible. One particularly welcome improvement involves the ability to position furniture in midair without relying on complicated placement tricks.
Currently, players frequently use unconventional techniques to create floating decorations, elevated furniture arrangements, and other elaborate interior designs.
The upcoming interface should make these possibilities easier to achieve through the game’s official decorating tools.
For players who enjoy creating detailed homes, the improvements could significantly reduce the time and effort required to complete ambitious designs.
The combination of expanded interiors and more flexible furniture placement could represent one of the biggest housing improvements Final Fantasy XIV has received in years.
Square Enix Also Plans to Introduce More Housing Plots
Housing availability remains another major concern throughout the Final Fantasy XIV community.
Unlike games that provide every player with an instanced personal property, Final Fantasy XIV relies on residential districts containing a limited number of housing plots.
This system has created ongoing competition among players, particularly those hoping to acquire medium or large properties.
Square Enix intends to address some of these concerns by introducing additional housing plots during Patch 8.1.
However, Yoshida did not clarify whether these properties would appear in existing residential districts or through entirely new housing areas.
While additional plots could improve availability, the interior expansion feature may provide another solution by reducing the need for players to purchase larger properties simply to gain more decorating space.
Evercold Arrives in February 2027
The housing announcement accompanied several major reveals concerning Final Fantasy XIV’s next expansion, Evercold.
Square Enix confirmed that Evercold will officially launch on February 23, 2027, following a delay from its original January release window. Players eligible for early access will be able to begin exploring the expansion on February 19.
The expansion will introduce new locations, combat content, and playable jobs, including Zephyr, a physical ranged DPS that combines crossbow attacks with assistance from an avian companion named Nephele.
Square Enix also outlined additional improvements planned throughout the expansion’s update cycle, including PvP changes, companion chocobo improvements, and further character customization options.
Although housing improvements will miss the expansion’s initial release, they remain part of the developer’s broader plans for Evercold.
Another Delay Tests Players’ Patience
Final Fantasy XIV has offered player housing for many years, but the system continues to face criticism over limited availability and restrictive decorating mechanics.
The ability to expand interiors without purchasing larger properties could make housing significantly more accessible to existing homeowners.
At the same time, repeated delays raise questions about how long players should reasonably expect to wait for improvements announced years earlier.
Square Enix appears committed to modernizing the system, but delivering these promised features will ultimately matter more than announcing additional changes.
For now, players must wait until Patch 8.1 to see whether the new housing tools and expanded interiors can finally address some of the game’s longest-standing frustrations.
Square Enix has not announced an exact release date for Patch 8.1.
