LEGO Harry Potter Collection Heads to Switch 2, But Existing Owners Must Buy It Again

Harry Potter fans will soon have another excuse to return to Hogwarts, as LEGO Harry Potter Collection is making its way to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 16.

The new version will cost $49.99 and brings both LEGO Harry Potter adventures together in a single package. However, players who already own the Collection on the original Nintendo Switch should be aware of one important detail: there is currently no announced upgrade path.

That means existing Switch owners will need to purchase the Switch 2 version separately if they want the new release.

Both LEGO Harry Potter Games Return

LEGO Harry Potter Collection combines LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1–4 and LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5–7, covering Harry’s entire journey through Hogwarts.

The first game originally launched in 2010 and adapted the first four books and films. Its sequel followed in 2011 and completed the story with Years 5 through 7.

Both games were eventually remastered and bundled together as LEGO Harry Potter Collection, which has since appeared across several platforms.

The Switch 2 release does not introduce a new adventure. Instead, it brings the existing Collection to Nintendo’s newer hardware.

What Changes on Nintendo Switch 2?

The actual content remains the same as previous versions of LEGO Harry Potter Collection.

Players should therefore expect the familiar characters, levels, puzzles, collectibles, spells and cooperative gameplay from earlier releases.

The Switch 2’s more powerful hardware could provide improvements to areas such as resolution, image quality, loading times and overall performance. However, specific technical upgrades have not been detailed, so players should not expect a major remaster unless further information is announced.

For now, this is best viewed as a Switch 2 version of the existing Collection rather than another overhaul of the two games.

No Upgrade for Existing Switch Owners

Perhaps the biggest downside concerns players who already bought LEGO Harry Potter Collection on Nintendo Switch.

At the moment, no paid or free Switch 2 upgrade has been announced.

Anyone wanting the dedicated Switch 2 edition will therefore need to spend another $49.99, even if they already own the Collection on Nintendo’s previous console.

For newcomers, the package still contains two sizeable LEGO adventures. Existing owners, however, may have a harder time justifying another purchase unless the Switch 2 version delivers meaningful technical improvements.

Harry Potter Has Been Waiting a Long Time for a New LEGO Game

The release also highlights just how long it has been since Harry Potter received a completely new traditional LEGO game.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5–7 arrived in 2011, meaning 15 years have passed since the franchise received a new standalone LEGO adventure on home consoles.

Harry Potter later appeared through LEGO Dimensions, but the series never received another full game comparable to Years 1–4 or Years 5–7.

Traveller’s Tales has instead returned to several of its other major properties over the years. LEGO Star Wars received a major comeback with LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga in 2022, while Batman returned to the spotlight with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.

That naturally raises the question of whether Harry Potter could eventually receive similar treatment.

Could a New LEGO Harry Potter Game Happen?

There is currently no confirmation that a completely new LEGO Harry Potter game is in development.

Still, the franchise remains an obvious candidate.

A modern LEGO Harry Potter title could revisit the entire saga with larger environments, redesigned levels and gameplay systems built around current hardware, much like Traveller’s Tales has done when returning to other major franchises.

The Switch 2 release of LEGO Harry Potter Collection should not be treated as evidence that such a project exists. For now, it simply gives Nintendo’s latest console its own version of the existing collection.

Fans will be able to return to LEGO Hogwarts when LEGO Harry Potter Collection launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on Friday, October 16, 2026, for $49.99.
