War in the North Legacy Edition Gets Physical PS5 Release

More than 15 years after its original release, The Lord of the Rings: War in the North is getting another chance. The 2011 action RPG recently returned as a modern Legacy Edition, and collectors can now add a physical version to their shelves.

Following the surprise digital release in August 2026, physical editions of War in the North: Legacy Edition are now available to pre-order for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.

Limited Run Games is handling the physical release, with both Standard and Deluxe editions available.

War in the North Gets a Second Chance

The original War in the North launched in 2011 and offered a darker journey through Middle-earth than many Lord of the Rings games at the time.

Instead of following Frodo, Aragorn, or the other members of the Fellowship directly, players controlled three heroes fighting their own war in the northern regions of Middle-earth.

Players could switch between the human ranger Eradan, elven loremaster Andriel, and dwarven champion Farin. Cooperative multiplayer was also a major part of the experience.

However, the game struggled commercially after release. It eventually disappeared from several digital storefronts in 2018, with licensing issues widely suspected to have played a role.

That could easily have been the end of War in the North.

Instead, it returned.

Legacy Edition Arrived in August 2026

Aspyr unexpectedly brought The Lord of the Rings: War in the North back digitally in August 2026 under a new publisher.

The new Legacy Edition isn’t simply the old game running on newer hardware either.

It includes several improvements designed to make the 2011 RPG feel more at home on modern consoles.

The Legacy Edition features:

  • 60 FPS gameplay
  • Visual improvements and additional polish
  • Numerous bug and glitch fixes
  • Improved user interface
  • Autosaving
  • Additional save slots
  • Gyro and motion controls on PS5 and Nintendo Switch
  • The ability to switch between all three heroes during combat

That final addition represents a particularly notable change. Players can now swap between Eradan, Andriel, and Farin while fighting rather than being locked into a single character.

Physical Editions Are Now Available

Collectors now have another option.

Limited Run Games opened pre-orders for physical copies on October 2, 2026, with orders remaining available until December 13, 2026.

The Standard Edition costs $49.99 and includes the Legacy Edition on disc or cartridge, depending on the platform.

It also comes with an O-ring slipcover and an eight-page Wayfinder’s Ledger.

Those wanting something more substantial can pick up the Deluxe Edition for $79.99.

What’s Included in the Deluxe Edition?

The Deluxe Edition includes everything found in the Standard release alongside several additional collectibles.

Buyers receive:

  • The Legacy Edition game
  • O-ring slipcover
  • Eight-page Wayfinder’s Ledger
  • Steelbook
  • Full-color cloth map
  • Weathered letter
  • Foreword by Jed Brophy
  • Wax-seal sticker

It’s certainly aimed at collectors, but the existence of a physical release is arguably just as interesting as the extras themselves.

Physical Games Aren’t Dead Yet

The timing makes this release especially notable.

Physical games continue to face pressure as publishers increasingly push digital distribution. That makes seeing a game from 2011 return with an actual disc or cartridge surprisingly refreshing.

A title that disappeared from digital storefronts years ago is now returning physically on three modern platforms.

That’s a pretty good demonstration of why physical media still matters.

Digital games can disappear because of licensing agreements, publisher decisions, storefront closures, or other circumstances outside a player’s control. Physical releases aren’t a perfect solution, especially when patches are involved, but they provide another layer of preservation.

For War in the North, that’s particularly fitting considering its history.

Aspyr Is Bringing More Middle-earth Games Back

War in the North isn’t the only older Middle-earth game receiving attention.

Aspyr also brought Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 30.

That creates an interesting pattern.

Embracer Group’s acquisition of Middle-earth Enterprises also means the wider rights situation surrounding Tolkien-based games has changed considerably since War in the North originally disappeared.

Whether that leads to more forgotten Lord of the Rings games returning remains to be seen.

For now, though, War in the North has gone from a commercially struggling 2011 release to a game getting a full physical reissue 15 years later.

Not many games get a comeback like that.
