Nintendo players are finally getting the chance to experience two of the most popular Middle-earth games of the last decade. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War are officially heading to Nintendo Switch 2, with the collection set to release on September 30.
The release marks the first time both games have appeared on Nintendo hardware, more than a decade after Shadow of Mordor originally introduced players to Talion and the Nemesis System.
For players who skipped the games during the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC generations, the Switch 2 release offers another opportunity to experience Monolith Productions’ take on Middle-earth.
Both Middle-earth Shadow Games Are Coming to Switch 2
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor originally launched in 2014. Its sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, followed in 2017 and significantly expanded the original game’s open-world structure.
The games follow Talion, a Gondorian Ranger who becomes bound to the spirit of Celebrimbor. Together, they wage war against Sauron’s forces during a story set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
While the games take plenty of liberties with established Middle-earth lore, they developed their own identity through large-scale battles, fortress assaults, Orc armies, and the relationship between Talion and Celebrimbor.
Shadow of War ultimately brought Talion’s story to a conclusion while greatly expanding the systems introduced by its predecessor.
Now, both adventures are making the jump to Switch 2 on September 30.
The Nemesis System Remains the Star
The biggest reason the Shadow games are still remembered today is the Nemesis System.
Rather than filling the world with disposable enemies, the system allows individual Orcs to develop personalities, strengths, weaknesses, ranks, relationships, and memories based on their encounters with the player.
An Orc that defeats Talion can become stronger and rise through Sauron’s army. Another might survive an encounter and return later with scars. Rivals can remember previous fights, mock Talion over past defeats, betray allies, develop fears, or become increasingly powerful as the campaign continues.
This creates personal stories that aren’t completely scripted beforehand.
Two players can progress through the same campaign and end up with very different enemies and experiences because of how the Nemesis System reacts to their actions.
Shadow of War pushed the concept even further by connecting it to fortress warfare and army building. Players could recruit Orcs, infiltrate enemy forces, establish followers, defend fortresses, and create their own collection of memorable allies and rivals.
Even years later, few games have attempted anything quite like it.
A Strange Time for the Series to Return
The Switch 2 release also arrives during an uncertain period for the franchise.
Monolith Productions, the studio responsible for both Shadow of Mordor and Shadow of War, was closed in 2025. That left the future of the Shadow series unclear and removed the studio responsible for creating its most recognizable gameplay system.
There has been no indication that a third Shadow game is currently on the way.
That makes the Switch 2 release particularly interesting. Instead of introducing another sequel, the two existing games are being brought to an entirely new Nintendo audience.
For longtime fans, it is another way to revisit Talion’s story. For Nintendo players, however, September 30 will effectively be the franchise’s debut.
Middle-earth Finally Gets Its Nintendo Moment
The timing also gives two older games another chance to find an audience.
Shadow of Mordor is now more than a decade old, while Shadow of War originally arrived nearly nine years ago. Despite their age, the Nemesis System remains the feature that separates them from many other open-world action games.
Whether this Switch 2 release leads to anything more for the franchise remains unknown.
For now, Nintendo players will finally be able to build armies, hunt Orc captains, create personal rivalries, storm fortresses, and experience Talion’s complete journey when Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and Middle-earth: Shadow of War arrive on Switch 2 on September 30.
