Mechabellum has taken a major step toward becoming a free-to-play game. The popular mech autobattler has launched a Free Edition on Steam alongside its massive 2.0 update, allowing players to access most of the game without paying upfront.
Previously sold for $14.99, Mechabellum currently holds an 84% positive Steam rating. Instead of heavily restricting the free version, the developers have chosen to keep most of the actual gameplay available while slowing down progression and rewards.
For anyone who has been waiting to try Mechabellum, there is now very little stopping them.
Mechabellum’s Steam Free Edition Is Now Available
Mechabellum originally entered Steam Early Access in May 2023 before reaching its full 1.0 release in September 2024.
Two years later, the game is undergoing another major transformation.
Mechabellum 2.0 launched on September 21, followed by the Steam Free Edition on September 22. The new version gives free players access to most of the content previously available to paying customers.
That includes online battles and the newly introduced Star Expedition co-op mode.
Rather than creating a heavily restricted demo, the Free Edition mainly changes how quickly players progress.
What Are the Free Edition Restrictions?
Players using the Steam Free Edition can still experience the core of Mechabellum, but several limitations have been introduced.
These include restricted access to public chat, reduced warehouse capacity in Star Expedition, slower cosmetic reward acquisition, and a slower rate for unlocking Tech Points.
The important distinction is that these restrictions primarily affect progression and convenience.
Core battles and major gameplay systems remain accessible.
It makes the Free Edition significantly more substantial than a traditional trial where players might only receive access to a handful of matches, maps, or units before being asked to purchase the full game.
Mechabellum 2.0 Introduces Star Expedition
The transition comes alongside Mechabellum 2.0, which introduces Star Expedition as one of the game’s biggest additions.
Star Expedition is a roguelike-style co-op mode spread across nine planets.
Players can tackle the mode alone or alongside other players, with the experience designed around replayability rather than rushing through objectives under a strict timer.
The lack of time pressure also makes Star Expedition an interesting alternative to competitive multiplayer.
Players who enjoy Mechabellum’s tactical combat but aren’t interested in constantly fighting other players now have another substantial way to play.
There Is Already Plenty to Play
At its core, Mechabellum is a turn-based tactical mech autobattler where positioning, unit composition, upgrades, and adapting to an opponent can determine the outcome of a battle.
Its multiplayer options include traditional 1v1 battles, 2v2 matches, and four-player free-for-all encounters.
PvE content, Survival Mode, single-player options, seasonal progression, leaderboards, and Battle Contracts further expand the game.
Battle Contracts effectively function as seasonal passes, with both free and paid progression available.
Combined with Star Expedition, the Free Edition gives new players access to a surprisingly large portion of the overall package.
But Don’t Buy It Just Yet
There is however another important detail for anyone interested in owning the complete version of this game.
The full version of Mechabellum is scheduled to become free through the Epic Games Store from September 24 until October 1.
Unlike the Steam Free Edition, this promotion gives players the complete game without the progression restrictions attached to Steam’s permanently free version.
That means anyone who wants to try the game immediately can download the Steam Free Edition, while players willing to wait until September 24 can claim the complete version through Epic Games Store.
Once claimed during the giveaway period, the full game can be kept.
A Smart Way to Open Mechabellum to More Players
Moving from a $14.99 paid release toward a largely free model dramatically lowers the barrier to entry.
Multiplayer games depend heavily on maintaining an active player base. Allowing almost anyone to jump into Mechabellum could therefore help matchmaking, introduce more players to competitive modes, and give Star Expedition a much larger potential audience.
At the same time, the developers haven’t completely abandoned monetization.
Slower progression, cosmetic rewards, paid Battle Contracts, and other premium elements provide ways to monetize the game without placing the basic combat experience behind a mandatory purchase.
The result is somewhere between a traditional premium game and a conventional free-to-play release.
For players, however, the biggest takeaway is simple: Mechabellum has suddenly become much easier to try.
And if you want the unrestricted full version, September 24 is the date to remember.
