GTA 6 Online May Not Arrive Until 2027

GTA 6 is easily one of the biggest upcoming game releases, but players hoping to immediately jump into a new version of GTA Online may need to wait.

Rockstar Games and Take-Two have continued to position GTA 6 primarily as a single-player experience. Meanwhile, the existing GTA Online is expected to remain supported after GTA 6 launches.

That creates an increasingly important question: when exactly will GTA 6 get its own online experience?

For now, there is no confirmed GTA 6 Online release date, and players should not assume multiplayer will be available on day one.

GTA 6 Launches as a Single-Player Game

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, with Rockstar currently focusing its marketing on the single-player experience.

The game will introduce players to Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, with Jason and Lucia at the center of the story.

Rockstar has demonstrated the world, characters and gameplay players can expect, but it has yet to provide a proper announcement detailing a GTA 6 version of GTA Online.

Take-Two and Rockstar have instead emphasized GTA 6 as a single-player title.

That wording is significant.

It suggests that anyone buying GTA 6 at launch should primarily expect the story campaign rather than treating a new GTA Online experience as part of the initial package.

Current GTA Online Isn’t Going Anywhere Yet

Another important detail is Rockstar’s continued support for the existing GTA Online.

GTA Online has become an enormous part of Grand Theft Auto since originally launching alongside the GTA 5 generation. More than a decade later, Rockstar continues to release updates, vehicles, missions, businesses and other content.

That support is expected to continue even after GTA 6 arrives.

Keeping the current GTA Online running would make considerably more sense if GTA 6’s multiplayer successor isn’t immediately ready.

It would allow Rockstar to continue serving its massive existing online community while giving the studio additional time to develop and prepare whatever comes next.

A Delayed Online Launch Wouldn’t Be New for Rockstar

Rockstar has previously separated its major single-player releases from their online components.

GTA 5 originally launched on September 17, 2013, while GTA Online followed roughly two weeks later on October 1.

Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on October 26, 2018, while Red Dead Online entered beta approximately one month later.

However, GTA 6 could potentially have a considerably larger gap.

There is currently no official confirmation that GTA 6 Online will launch weeks or even months after the base game.

Based on the information currently available, players may have to wait until 2027 before GTA 6’s online era properly begins.

That remains an estimate rather than a confirmed release window.

GTA 6 Online Could Become Much Bigger

While Rockstar remains quiet, rumors and leaks have painted an ambitious picture of what GTA 6 Online could eventually become.

Some reports have suggested Rockstar wants to greatly expand user-generated content, potentially allowing players and creators to build experiences within the GTA ecosystem.

That has resulted in comparisons with platforms such as Fortnite and Roblox, where community-created experiences have become a major part of their long-term success.

None of this currently confirms what Rockstar’s final GTA 6 multiplayer plans will look like.

Players should therefore treat claims surrounding extensive creator tools, custom worlds and major user-generated-content systems as unconfirmed until Rockstar provides official details.

At Minimum, Expectations Are Extremely High

Even without the more ambitious rumors, Rockstar faces enormous expectations.

GTA Online has evolved dramatically since 2013.

What started as a relatively straightforward multiplayer extension of GTA 5 eventually expanded into an enormous online platform filled with businesses, heists, properties, races, missions, vehicles and years of additional content.

A GTA 6 successor would therefore be expected to offer at least a comparable foundation while benefiting from GTA 6’s newer technology, improved visuals and much larger modern open world.

Rockstar also has more than a decade of experience operating GTA Online to draw from.

The challenge will be replacing an ecosystem that millions of players have spent years building characters, businesses, vehicle collections and fortunes inside.

What Happens to Existing GTA Online Players?

For the foreseeable future, nothing suggests existing GTA Online players will suddenly lose access when GTA 6 arrives.

Rockstar’s continued support means the current game can effectively exist alongside GTA 6.

Whether progress, characters, money, vehicles or other content will eventually transfer into a GTA 6 online experience remains unknown.

Players should not assume their existing GTA Online progress will carry over unless Rockstar explicitly announces such a system.

Considering the enormous differences expected between GTA 5 and GTA 6, Rockstar could instead choose to give everyone a completely fresh start.

November 19 Is About GTA 6’s Story

For now, November 19 should be viewed as the beginning of GTA 6’s single-player era.

Players will finally be able to explore Leonida, experience Jason and Lucia’s story and discover Rockstar’s next open world.

The online side of GTA 6 remains one of the game’s biggest unanswered questions.

Rockstar hasn’t confirmed when it will arrive, how it will work or whether it will directly replace the current GTA Online.

Until the company makes an official announcement, a 2027 launch remains a reasonable possibility rather than a confirmed date.

After waiting this long for GTA 6, players hoping for the next generation of GTA Online may have to wait a little longer.
