Call of Duty: Warzone is preparing to leave the previous console generation behind. With Modern Warfare 4 arriving on October 23, support for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is approaching its end.
Warzone will stop working on both consoles when Modern Warfare 4’s Season 1 content arrives shortly after launch. That means players still using PS4 or Xbox One have roughly another month before they will need newer hardware to continue playing.
The move has been coming for some time. Activision already started winding down Warzone support on the older consoles earlier this year.
Warzone Has Already Started Leaving PS4 and Xbox One Behind
The first major step happened on June 4, when Warzone was removed from the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One storefronts. Players who already had the game installed were still able to continue playing.
Another restriction followed on June 25. Warzone’s in-game store was disabled on PS4 and Xbox One, preventing players on those systems from making new purchases.
Free Battle Pass rewards remained available, but it was another clear indication that Activision was preparing to retire the last-generation versions completely.
The final step will arrive alongside the Modern Warfare 4 era.
Once Season 1 begins, Warzone will no longer be playable on PS4 or Xbox One.
Players Can Carry Their Warzone Progress Forward
Losing support for the older consoles does not necessarily mean losing years of Warzone progression.
Players moving from PS4 to PS5 or from Xbox One to Xbox Series X/S can continue using their existing progression by signing into the same Activision account.
Previously purchased content tied to the player’s account will also carry forward where supported.
There is one important limitation involving CoD Points.
Unspent CoD Points are tied to the platform ecosystem rather than simply the Activision account. A PS4 player moving to PS5 can therefore keep their balance, while someone moving from PlayStation to Xbox will not see those unspent points transfer.
Items already purchased using those points are tied to the account and can still transfer where cross-platform progression supports them.
Players planning to switch console families may therefore want to spend their remaining CoD Points before leaving their old platform behind.
Modern Warfare 4 Will Bring a Major Warzone Reset
The end of PS4 and Xbox One support is only one part of a much larger Warzone transition.
Modern Warfare 4 will become the next major Call of Duty game integrated into Warzone, bringing another substantial change to the battle royale’s weapons and seasonal progression.
Warzone’s current arsenal is expected to be reset as Modern Warfare 4 weapons and loadouts take over.
That could make the upcoming integration feel closer to a fresh start than a traditional seasonal update, particularly for players who have spent considerable time building and upgrading their current loadouts.
A new map is also expected to become part of the transition.
Players have already seen the Zodiac Resurgence map during the Modern Warfare 4 beta, making it one of the first glimpses of what the next Warzone era could look like.
Warzone Has Changed Dramatically Since 2020
Warzone originally launched in March 2020 and quickly became one of Call of Duty’s biggest ongoing experiences.
However, the game players know today is very different from the original Verdansk experience.
Warzone has gone through integrations with Black Ops Cold War, Vanguard, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7. Along the way, Activision introduced new maps, movement systems, weapons, progression systems and major technical changes.
The franchise also experimented with Warzone Mobile and introduced the substantial Warzone 2.0 overhaul before continuing to evolve the main game.
Supporting hardware released in 2013 while continuing to expand Warzone was eventually going to become increasingly difficult.
Modern Warfare 4 now appears to be the point where Activision is finally drawing that line.
An Era of Warzone Is Coming to an End
For PS4 and Xbox One players, this is more than another Call of Duty update.
Warzone arrived during the previous console generation and remained playable on those systems throughout multiple Call of Duty releases and major transformations of the battle royale.
More than six years after Warzone first launched, that support is finally approaching its conclusion.
Modern Warfare 4 releases on October 23, with Season 1 following shortly afterward. Once that seasonal integration happens, PS4 and Xbox One players will need to move to PS5, Xbox Series X/S or another supported platform if they want to continue playing Warzone.
For everyone else, Modern Warfare 4’s arrival looks set to begin another major rebuild of Warzone — complete with new weapons, progression and maps.
